Title: NEW Marvel Star Wars Comics - In Stores Now!!!
Post by: jjreason on December 07, 2014, 12:38:01 PM
An article I found suggests the upcoming Marvel Star Wars issue #1 will be the first comic to sell 1 million issues since Batman 500. That's.... over 20 years ago folks. I can't recommend highly enough that you zip out to your local comic shop & try to grab a copy of two just in case (heck, it might even be worth reading - John Cassaday is the artist  :party0007: ). The story is set to take place between ANH and ESB.

The comic is due to be released on Wednesday, January 14th, 2015 - I would expect the cover price of the regular version to be in the $3.99 price range.

http://comicbook.com/2014/12/05/marvels-star-wars-1-to-sell-over-1-000-000-copies/

Here's a link to the official SW site preview:

http://www.starwars.com/news/marvel-star-wars-1-exclusive-preview

Here's a look at Cassaday's "regular" (though hardly regular at all by my math, it's friggin' amazing) cover:

And here's a sneak preview of the "Action Figure Variant" cover, which you know they'll be gouging for. In my opinion you should NOT fall into the trap of paying many times cover price for the variant - a lot of stores will be asking $25 for these I'm quite sure.  :speechless-smiley-004:

Man, I haven't been excited for a new Star Wars comic in so long.... no offence to Dark Horse, they did some great work... just not all of it in line with my area of specific SW interest.

If the variant covers are rare I could see them going up in price but if it actually sells a million? It will be an event but the regular release would not be rare at all and should not go up much.

I'm curious to read it however but I will probably get the first issue and unless it blows me away I'll wait to buy the trades. (if they sell x-ray specs and model kits in their ads I might buy the single issues however!)

You're right of course, the last "big" selling books (X-Men volume 2 #1, McFarlane Spider-Man #1, Batman 500) are all worth little more than cover price today. The event though is exciting, and I'm guessing there will be lots of SW fans to talk with at the local comic shops - as well as a good few curious speculators/onlookers - should be a fun day!

Here's another variant - available at "launch parties" only - poor Jaxxon gets no respect...I'm guessing even Napseeker will line up for this version....

JR, it's a great cover - but a cover won't do, they should include a free Jaxxon action figure when you buy the comic  :)

I actually love that homage to the Kenner card, that's ingenious... they could do one of every major character in subsequent issues and I'd buy it!

Haha - poor Jaxxon!  I haven't picked up a regular issue comic in years, but I may have to make an exception here.  Those are some great covers.

Ok as far as I'm concerned, Jaxxon's inclusion on the cover of the new Marvel Star Wars series, which purports to be part of the canon, means Jaxxon is again officially part of the canon!

So Hasbro, you now have Disney's blessing to make a Jaxxon action figure... go!   :rollfloorlaffsmiley:

Today was the release day, anyone else head out to grab a copy? I got the standard cover as well as the painting of Luke in the action figure package variant. Just going to read it here shortly, I'll be sure to pipe in with my review when I'm done!  :party0007:

It was pretty awesome! Looking forward to seeing where they go from here. Hopefully everyone else who went out looking for a copy was able to get the one(s) they were after - I'd love to hear anyone else's impressions of the first issue.  :)`

Issue #2 came out last week, and Darth Vader #1 hit stands this past Wednesday - should be lots in stock at your local comic shop!  :luke:

I've now read issues 1 and 2 of the new Marvel Star Wars and I have some issues with it. Mainly the end of issue 1 and then the continuation into 2.

SPOILER ALERT if you haven't read these yet

Luke heads down the hall at the end at the end of issue 1 with his lightsaber blazing. Given all of the training he received is some remotes on the Falcon, I'd say he's not much of a swordsman yet. Maybe it's an arrogance that if he looks like a Jedi, people will think he is one. And then he runs into Darth Vader.

In issue 2 Darth says that Luke is no Jedi and that he will use him to find the person who blew up the Death Star. But wait, didn't Vader sense that the pilot who did the deed was strong in the force. I'm guessing Vader must need a ventilator change, because in my mind: Hmmm the pilot was strong in the force. This guy has a lightsaber, the weapon of a Jedi. This guy is on the Light side. Maybe, just maybe this is the pilot.

Visually it is very nice and the side story with 3P0 is OK. (Oh OK, no. c-3p0 can fly a ship and go on some serious missions but the first time he confronts these aliens, he drops the blaster. Yes, his hands are messed up, but really.)

Ok, I have yet to read Vader, but so far this is smacking me of the original Marvel where they threw in stuff that would later fall flat when the next movie came out (original Splinters of the Mind's Eye) Except this time the movies are all out.
Title: Re: NEW Marvel Star Wars Comics - In Stores Now!!!
Post by: jjreason on February 15, 2015, 02:01:41 PM
My only big problem so far is (in my mind anyhow) contacts between Luke & Darth diminish the showdown at the end of ESB. I can see this being a setup, they didn't really duel here at all - but if they keep crossing paths it would really stand to water down the showdown on Bespin.

The art is good. The characterizations are fine - they say things that are at least like things the characters would say - but I worry they're already falling into rehashing/paraphrasing lines from the movies, another thing I would have strongly suggested they stay away from.

All in all I'm thinking it's "ok" so far. SW 1 and Vader 1 both better than that, SW 2 a bit of a letdown. We'll see how things progress.

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting but yeah, I felt like it was a mix of Marvel trying to catch the old time vibe mixed in with what we've already seen Dark Horse do…I'm pretty sure I'm waiting for trade paperbacks now, and not even sure I'll buy those. I'm actually more excited about the prospect of a pre-sequel tie-in and a Marvel series that will "fill in" the gaps between the new films! Disney/Lucasfilm/Marvel have promised this will be a major project in integrated, across-platform storytelling like we've never seen before. Not sure if the current series taking place in the past is going to add stuff and lead into the sequels but if so they had better start advertising this aspect so that people like me might have a reason to read it.

I've read the 3 issues of the 2 series that have come out and I agree - all OK so far.  Jason Aaron is maybe my favourite writer in comics but so far it is just OK.  Some characterization is good, art is fine.

The sniper scene was great though.

Jonathan Hickman is likely my favourite, so I'd like to see them slow things down a little bit after the frenetic opening. Character interaction, thought processes etc - make the confrontations actually mean something, and drop moments on us that make the reading worthwhile.... hopefully there will be something for everyone here. I really like the preview art for Princess Leia, and her series starts next month.

Princess Leia #1 hit shelves this week - picked up both the action figure variant cover of this issue as well as the Darth Vader one, which was a second copy of that issue for me. Easily parted from my money, I am.  :speechless-smiley-004:

Leia's book picks up at the Yavin ceremony & goes from there. I found the characterization to be pretty good & the issue was fairly strong - though the art inside is likely my least favourite of the 3 series. A new character is introduced -a female rebel pilot who will be Leia's sidekick to start. Good comic.

I just don't buy into the gang running around as a hit-squad after the events of ANH. So far the first 3 issues have been terrible. Dialogue is awful. It's the typical cash-grab EU stuff I hate and the reason I have no qualms about Disney scrapping everything that wasn't officially produced by Lucas.

I think Darth Vader has the most potential. If they change Star Wars gradually into focusing more on supporting cast members as opposed to the core heroes, I might change my mind.....

I just finished Vader 3 and 4 (don't live where there are comic shops) and wow...

How the frack can they stick Indiana Jones into Star Wars. A rogue archaeologist. The Ark Angel. The Rolling Ball of droid rolling after Dr. Aphra. The pose as she runs through the lasers. The dust to see where to go. The fracking Hat. "This belongs in a weapon, not in storage or a museum"

For frack's sakes! Everyone was pissed at the fact they shoved Close Encounters into Indiana Jones. Now they do this. Sorry but that is poodoo writing. Plain and simple. Then we get organic droids from an alien queen. I was pissed when they did that in Clone Wars as their homage to Aliens, don't bring it and Terminator back in. Oh and they say... we are not using anything from the past novels, games, comics or multimedia. And then they create a new HK-47.

I am not sure if these are just being rushed or if the writing is just weak.

Sorry for the swearing but if Dark Horse would have done this, it would have been a Tales or Infinity, not a mainstream.

Still stuck on getting the figure variants - picked up regular & Chewie versions of Star Wars 4 today. I'm now 3 issues behind on my reading though & need to get caught up.  :luke:

Didn't like Vader 3 & 4 either, none of the new characters in that book appeal to me in any way, shape or form. Not sure how long I'll keep up with it at this point - 2-3 more issues tops unless it shapes up. On to Star Wars 4, hopefully that's better.  :speechless-smiley-004:

EDITED: It was. I don't have any trouble enjoying Cassaday & Jason Aaron - the characters read ok & look great, even if the circumstances are different than I would have chosen. No danger of me dropping this series as of yet.

Picked up Leia 3 today. Quite surprised they didn't come up with something for Free Comic Book Day - even just a cheap flyer with the covers reprinted would have been fine.  :(

Latest issue of Vader…yuck! It felt like Robot-chicken. And going back to Geonosis felt forced and that Queen was lame. Vader just doesn't seem like Vader to me. I'm out. If I hear at some point down the road it gets good I'll buy the trades.

So... sounds like Marvel just doesn't get Star Wars? At least not like Dark Horse did. Something tells me that this direction is coming down through editorial from Disney. Some of the issues people are mentioning seem like the result of "Disneyfication". I haven't bothered to read any of them, so for those who have, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, and to hijack a phrase that so many Marvelites like to use - revert the rights to Dark Horse!  :winking0071:

To be honest, I don't find these comics any worse than the original ones put out but comics have come a long way since then and so has the concept of the whole SW universe. It's the same schtick... it just doesn't work any more for me as an adult.

I am finding them quite enjoyable, Darth Vader being my favorite of the 3.  Part of it is possibly because my boys enjoy them so much, and we can discuss it together.   Also I think I may feel like I have to read them, because it is cannon.  I didn't feel that way necessarily about Dark Horse,  I could pick and chose what I wanted.   The thing that bothers me is I have 4 complete shelf levels dedicated to expanded universe figures.  I almost want to unload them now, or put in storage. With all the movies coming out and shelf space obviously at a premium maybe I should be displaying only cannon figures?

I honestly don't know how much Dark Horse dealt with the OT heroes as I stopped reading them around 2000. Marvel has focused on the era between ANH and ESB, which I almost think could jive with the entire EU produced by Dark Horse & others - it's like they've called the old EU stuff "non-canon" but haven't really done anything to refute it, either.

I have my own canon - it's the 6, soon to be 7 movies. The rest is either fun (Rogue Squadron, Shadows of the Empire) or it's not (a lot of the rest).

Whimper... whimper....Alright Marvel. I give up. You are doing a great job.

Of repurposing old Dark Horse as yours. As for the new comics

Fark You.

When I read Vader 4 and saw the name of the operative CYLO-IV I thought to myself, "there is no farking way they are going to... I mean come on.... they've already done Indiana Jones, Aliens and Terminator. They can't.... no."

And they did, "When CYLO-IV didn't return I was activated....I am more than human" So they took over BSG now. CYLOIV as in CYLON.

And then the X-men at the end.

Who the hell is OKing this. A Vader title should be about power and dominance. The Vader series at the end of the DH run are an excellent example. Purge and Dark Times with Vader were so grim and raw. What you expect from Vader. He's a bad ass.

This comic is a joke. Why the hell are they allowing such poor writing and crappy ideas through. Please, make the bleeding stop.

Wow, that almost sounds like an April Foods joke... I'm glad I haven't jumped onboard with any of the Marvel comics so far. It's hard to take this stuff seriously...  I was hoping that they'd recapture a tiny bit of the classic Marvel SW goofiness, but so far this ain't it.

And this is supposedly now all canon? Right?

Yes, this is "real" Star Wars. I don't hate the Vader title as much as Kayle, to be honest, but they're certainly not going where I would have chosen to go with it. It's quite apparent these are super hero creators falling back on what they know best.

Star Wars 6 has hit the stands, complete with a battle between 2 key OT characters & a couple of significant revelations. I'm mainly sticking around for the Cassaday art. Of interest, the letters page starts this issue & I will likely go back & have a look to see if they print any from folks expressing concerns.

EDITED: Forgot to mention that Lando is getting his own limited series as well which will likely be worth a look. Charles Soule is a writer that I'm following more & more, and the art from Alex Maleev alone should be worth the cover price (he paints everything & his work on Daredevil was absolutely bloody amazing).

Finished the Leia limited series (5 issues, the last of which came out either last week or the week before). Overall she was characterized ok, but the story seems like it could have been told in fewer issues - maybe even one double-sized special or something. It was just ok.

The last couple issues of Darth Vader have had good pace to them, but again I'm not 100 percent sure I'd go where they've gone with the story. I like seeing the Bounty Hunters (we've seen Bossk now as well as Boba Fett).

Star Wars 7 doesn't come out now until July 27, I believe there has been a delay. Of interest, Cassaday is NOT the artist on this issue, rather Simon Bianchi (who is also excellent) is doing an Obi Wan-focused issue. Cassaday lasting 6 issues would surprise some.....

Lando 1 just came out this week & I haven't read it yet. I like both creators so I'm looking forward to seeing how that series goes (it's planned for 5 issues just like the Princess Leia one was).

Finished Lando 3 & SW 8. Both very entertaining. Stuart Immonen has taken over for John Cassaday, and I'm going to say the characters look even better. I like where the SW main series is right now, 2 interesting plotlines being evenly split in the same issue.

Just read the first issue of Shattered Empire…the interesting tidbit there (that I was unaware of but maybe it was common knowledge) is something to do with the Poe character….
Title: Re: NEW Marvel Star Wars Comics - In Stores Now!!!
Post by: napseeker on September 12, 2015, 07:21:25 PM
I don't think it was common knowledge, at least if one has been avoiding the rumors and spoilers like I mostly have.  I guess some characters in the SW universe owe the destruction of the second Death Star to being conceived at all :)

edit: for those who don't want to read through the new canon novels and comics, there's a nice summary of what we now know about the EU here:
http://io9.com/everything-we-know-about-star-wars-post-return-of-the-j-1729549100

It sounds like the New Republic and Imperial Remnant sort of still adhere to the old EU (minus that whole awful Vong storyline).  In the talkbacks, a great point was made about how this allows for the non-canon "Legends" stories to be looked more at as a kind of hearsay that might've taken place during the new EU timeline, as if they were legends told about the post-OT gang, from a time far far off into the future.

Just finished Shattered Empire issue 4…Spoiler…

Couldn't help but wonder if Luke giving the 2nd tree to Poe's mother wasn't a hint that Poe might end up being strong in the Force and Luke sensed something… Or it was simply a nice gesture?  If there is something to it, makes me think that the end of TFA could be that we have a trio of future Jedi in Rey, Finn and Poe.
Title: Re: NEW Marvel Star Wars Comics - In Stores Now!!!
Post by: jjreason on October 30, 2015, 10:27:45 PM
Could be. I guess Shattered Empire was ok, but the more New EU I read, the more I think it's just the same but different - I think it's very hard to capture the actual feel of the movies and/or do anything truly meaningful with the story or characters outside the movies. I figured we'd at least see Poe Dameron develop into a character we could at least say we'd met going into EpVII - but I don't even think we saw him as a baby or kid in any of the 4 issues, did we??? All things being equal, I could have saved the money from buying these issues without feeling like I had missed anything.
Title: Re: NEW Marvel Star Wars Comics - In Stores Now!!!

Yeah, overall it is pretty lack lustre and not something we couldn't have pretty much guessed at (i.e. they had to continue to fight the remnant of the Empire). And on that level it just feels "same but different" and lacks any "wow, this is really starting to feel like an integrated project with lots to love". I guess that's why I find myself trying to milk any small detail for a potential insight that is more interesting than it suggests…my theory on Poe/Finn/Rey above for example. It's like, ok, if not something as "big" as that, what was the point of that series anyway???

Well both main series have completed their initial 12 issues and we've arrived at the first crossover - "Vader Down".

I just read the special lead-in issue (not a part of either series, but a stand alone special appropriately entitled "Vader Down" - it has a #1 on the cover even though there won't be a series). Simply put - this was by far the best single issue since the Marvel relaunches.

Mike Deodato, maybe the best artist working in comics, provides the pictures are they are typically awesome. The story is action packed & at least somewhat viable to those who only care about the movies (not like some of the comics that stretch your eyes abilities to roll).

The series will continue through the next 3 issues of Darth Vader (#13 is already available, picking up where the special left off) and 2 issues of Star Wars, meaning the complete run will be 6 issues. If you haven't ventured into the universe of new SW comics yet, you're not going to get a better issue to start with than the Vader Down special - highest possible recommendation.

Just finished Darth Vader 25, which brings the series to a close.... for now. I think they did a pretty solid job of wrapping things up. The Han Solo limited series may or may not be over with issue 4 which was also released today - I haven't read it yet. In my mind, the limited series bearing the names of OT characters (Leia, Chewbacca, Lando & a C3PO 1 shot so far) have all be "just ok". I wouldn't rush to find them, but would recommend trade paperbacks on clearance if one encountered such a thing.

I have been picking everything up in TPB so far.  I have enjoyed most of it, although the Vader one was the best of those that I have read.

The 5 issue Han Solo miniseries has come to an end. Like the other series created for specific characters, this one wasn't too bad - but I wouldn't call it required reading or anything unless you can find a well-priced collected edition. This is the series George Lucas came out & said he was enjoying to the media a few weeks ago.

Just finished Shattered Empire issue 4…Spoiler…

I just finished the Shattered Empire graphic  novel a couple of days ago.  I'm not gonna lie, I never clued in to the spoiler connection that you mentioned.  I'm gonna blame it on the fact that I get up at 4:00 every morning and I was falling asleep when I was reading it.

I would give it a 5/10.  Nothing too notable there other than the Emperors plan to destroy certain planets should he be overthrown.  In my mind the Emperor would have several "trophies" left over from the jedi temple and I would picture Luke going after them.

In case anyone has considered checking out the comics, but feels overwhelmed in the comic shop environment (you're not alone), here's a page showing the collected editions for the main series - looks like 6 volumes have been released so far.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_(Marvel_2015) (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_(Marvel_2015))

Vader down, though it looks thin on included issues, actually includes a Special issue as well as 2 issues from the Darth Vader series, so it would be a good deal. I would recommend checking amazon prices for these before heading to the comic shop, as there can be some very good deals found.... from time to time.

Finally picked up the hard cover for Darth Vader (vol 1).  Chapters .ca had it for about $10 off.  I guess that's as good as it's gonna get.  I have the soft cover versions of Vol 1 and Vol 2 (the hard cover contains both vol 1 and vol 2 plus more) but I prefer the hard covers now.  I've got a few older soft covers that are falling apart (Death of Superman, Cable, etc..).

I really liked Darth Vader vol 1, especially the Vader Down story. I will eventually try to replace my comics with collections - hardcover if I can get them at a decent price.

hardcover if I can get them at a decent price.

That's the tricky part.  It takes a lot of patience.

Still reading Poe's series in singles.  Going to grab Vader as collected books.

I've heard really good things about the Poe comic but haven't picked it up yet.

I think my next "big" purchase will be Star Wars Vol 1.  By "big", I mean over $30.  I've been wanting to get this for a while now, and Vol 3 comes out this summer so I'd like to get 1 & 2 and then 3 and then binge.
