Title: Sanjai's AWESOME 2015 Diorama Contest - Post your Entry Photos!
Post by: old man ben on September 16, 2015, 08:14:25 PM
With the onset of the new NFL season, I thought it only fitting to bring you highlights from the first Intergalactic Football Championships.  It was the Imperial Forces coached by Darth Vader versus the team of the Rebel Forces as coached by Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Fans, both human and aliens alike, filled the stands as they cheered on their favorites.  I had to leave early so I don't know who won. Hopefully it was the good guys. Pictures will follow shortly

That looks cool!  My wife and her sister are mega Packers fans so I'm sure she'll enjoy these pics.  I like how Old Man Ben is coaching while TPM Ben is smack talking Vader from the stands and AOTC Ben is puttin the moves on Ayy Vida, he's a triple threat.  Having Porkins on the O-line is a no-brainer.  If I was Vader I'd be anticipating a rush from the A-Wing pilot in the next play.  Who wants to bet Vader uses the force to help any wayward field goal attempts.

I figured one topic which everyone can reply to might fit the bill, so we can roll through one topic & see all the pics in their collective glory. Revel in the creativity of your fellow Snowtroopers!

And an extra large (ok, XXXXXXXXXL) thank you to long-time Snowtrooper AMBASAH (aka Sanjai) who has dealt with so many of us in an unfailingly fair & awesome manner over the last 10 years, if not longer. It was Sanjai's idea to have another diorama contest this year & his generosity alone that is going to provide a couple of lucky winners with some fantastic prizes.

On with the show!

This diorama contest has been a great motivation for finally getting around to making a proper home for my loose ewoks.  Around the same time this contest was first announced I had already been eyeing up a 12ft pine tree that was growing too close to my house.  If it had been left to grow it would have ended up running into my soffit and roof.  So out came the saw and my project began.  After cutting the tree down I divided it into four pieces that were around 32" each.  I had a scrap piece of plywood that was 2ft by 3ft and I screwed the four pieces to each of the four corners and trimmed off all the branches that went outside the perimeter of the plywood.  I was able to get the legs from a couple of trees that my buddy was taking down from his property.

I then took some fir and tablesaw'd and planned it down to workable sizes for the scale and used that for the framework and deck boards for the triangular platform.  I then cut pieces that were about 5" long and an inch and a quarter on the fat side with five degree angles on each side to make the circular platform that Chirpa's hut sits on.  Next I made a staircase to attach it to the triangular platform.

Chirpa's hut was made in a similar fashion as the platform it sits on, I ran the pieces through the table saw with five degree angles on each side to create the circular hut and brad nailed and glued it together.  For the roof I made a wire frame and then paper mache'd it.  I then took some hay that my wife scored from a co-worked and used some twine to secure it to the frame.

All the railing was made from bamboo sticks that came from the dollar store and it is held together with twine and a touch of white glue here and there.  The rail posts are friction fit with a drop of white glue into holes I drilled halfway through the deck board.

The elevator is 100% functional although I still haven't figured out how to motivate plastic figures to turn the crank themselves.

From the floor to the top of Chirpa's hut is 57" and it probably weights a good 20lbs.

I didn't really keep track but I probably put between 30 to 40 hrs into the project and it was lots of fun the entire time.  Please excuse the quality of the pics I have problems with every digital camera I have every tried to use.  I hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed making it and I'm looking fowards to seeing everyone else's work.

Hi Guys

Here is my diorama of the death star detention block control room, corridor to cell 2187, and the cell itself. Its made of foam core and poster board and the corridor floor and door locks have lighting incorporated within the diorama, as well as the ceiling of cell 2187. It's going to be the third floor of a larger 5 level death star diorama, which is a more long-term project. Enjoy!

Okay, here's my take of the Bespin Carbon Freezing Chamber. I've been working on this using reference photographs to get the details of the scene as accurate as "humanly" possible (well, for me LOL).

Total of 9 pictures.

And sorry in advance for the poor picture quality, very difficult to take these in the dark with the system lighted up.

Quick explanations on my setup...

1) The core setup is fully lighted. There's at least 3 XMas light sets in the base platform, two sets in the ceiling, one in the stairways and one for the higher platform and ramp.  Just plug the thing in a wall outlet and the diorama is brought to life. :)

2) The lifting tongue system is functional. Well, kind of. It can be lowered and raised with a simple rope. It's not fully completed (need to add some detailing soon), but it's kinda movie accurate. :)

3) The Ugnaughts Incinerator Room is a modular addition that can be removed and displayed separately. It's also fully lighted with three sets of lights, but this time powered with simply batteries.

4) The Lower enlighted tunnel Luke takes to chase Vader is also modular and can be removed from the display for maintenance (in case of light bulb failure) or to eventually connect it to another portion of the overall Bespin Display (I have plans to do the other portions of the Luke-Vader Duel when I can find time to do these scenes).

5) I used a lot of movie reference materials for the details, especially the Freezing Chamber Ceiling, the side detailing of the floor portion, as well as the lower access tunnel and Incinerator Room. I'm missing some junk for the later room, but most wall details are there.

Some features are still a WIP, there's a few corrections I'd like to do in the near future, but I told myself I have no time to do these before the contest deadline tomorrow. So these corrections will have to wait later.  :tongue0024:

Alright my turn... a last-minute rush to get this thing done on time!  :rollfloorlaffsmiley:

BACKGROUND

When I was a kid, the Kenner cantina was undoubtedly the playset that I wanted the most even moreso than the Death Star.

At the time, my reasoning was that if I was going to continue the adventures of Luke and the gang then the Death Star playset couldn't have been all that useful because the big bad space station was all blown up and gone. Whereas I was sure Luke and Han would still be going back to Tatooine and consequently, return to hang out at the cantina to chat, recruit more rebels to the cause, and lay low from the Empire. Also there's just something to be said about an environment populated by aliens and criminals, where fights and shootouts could spontaneously break out at any moment.

It's such a shame that Kenner didn't churn out more alien figures until RotJ since that meant the actual alien figures available to fill out the environment was going to be minimal (unless you were to toss in "aliens" from other toylines).

And the cantina playset itself felt fairly limited given that it only had a single table and the bar barely accomodated two or three patrons.

So one of my long-time desires was to do a modern update to the Kenner Cantina playset, giving some more room for aliens at the bar and additional tables.

THE DIORAMA

This is a fairly simple diorama to put together although it obviously requires some hunting for the Hasbro pieces. I didn't want to resort to having to use foamcore or cardboard or anything that wasn't already from a prior Hasbro toy release. The strict rule was that I'd only rely on pre-existing Hasbro parts in order to make a modern "Hasbro Cantina playset" in the spirit of the old Kenner cantina.

For you younglings who are not familiar with the original toy, this is the cover of the box:

My cantina is mainly derived from the PotF2 cardboard cantina, with the flimsy cardboard bar cut off, the enclave seating moved around a bit (or removed entirely), and the distillery also removed since it was going to be too big anyway to fit.

The new bar is made from the sturdier plastic cantina bar pieces that Hasbro came out with back in 2002. Even though I had enough cantina sections in my collection to create a longer bar, I kept it to 4 pieces connected together in total so that it would be reminscent of the undersized Kenner bar.

(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb351/snowtrooper_napseeker/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_011500u.jpg) (http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/snowtrooper_napseeker/media/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_011500u.jpg.html)

The droid detector is an accessory that came with the Wuhrer bartender figure, and the plastic tables were included with a few cantina alien figures from the 2008 Legacy Collection.

(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb351/snowtrooper_napseeker/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_011800u.jpg) (http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/snowtrooper_napseeker/media/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_011800u.jpg.html)

To boost the Kenner feel of my diorama, I used the modern super-articulated equivalents to the Kenner figures and posed them in similar positions as they were seen on the Kenner box. Note that Greedo and Han are actually in canonically incorrect positions (Greedo should've been on the right side, and Han on the left). And hilarious that Ponda Baba was cast as the bartender for the original photo! I guess they had to use somebody...

(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb351/snowtrooper_napseeker/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_011939u.jpg) (http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/snowtrooper_napseeker/media/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_011939u.jpg.html)

Luke is a simple custom of the TAC Moisture Farmer Luke (which had a horrible head sculpt), with the neck post shaved down so that it can fit the TVC Death Star Luke head.  The "Hammerhead" is the Ithorian Jedi figure from the TAC line. I was sorely tempted to repaint his outfit into the same shade of blue as the outfit worn by the vintage Hammerhead figure, but since I only had just this one figure I didn't really want to ruin him.

After taking the above photos, I populated the display with a few more canonical cantina aliens, most importantly Dr Evazan and Wuhrer, since as a kid I was somewhat annoyed that Kenner never made these two as figures so that their cantina playset would be more accurate with them in it. I also put Han and Greedo into their correct positions.

(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb351/snowtrooper_napseeker/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_103415u.jpg) (http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/snowtrooper_napseeker/media/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_103415u.jpg.html)

(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb351/snowtrooper_napseeker/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_203219u.jpg) (http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/snowtrooper_napseeker/media/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_203219u.jpg.html)

On the far right side, is an extra table with some aliens, but what I'd been hoping for these past few years is that Hasbro would release a super-articulated Bith musician so that I could have a band of them playing off to the side (just as a nod again to the Kenner cantina where the Bith band is playing next to Han and Greedo as part of the backdrop). The PotF2 Bith figures look terrible and I just refuse to buy them... I'm still holding onto hope Hasbro will sell us better-sculpted versions of the Bith someday.

(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb351/snowtrooper_napseeker/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_203527u.jpg) (http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/snowtrooper_napseeker/media/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_203527u.jpg.html)

Anyway, it's a neat little display, bigger than the Kenner cantina, but smaller than the actual PotF2 cardboard cantina.

(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb351/snowtrooper_napseeker/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_205315u.jpg) (http://s1201.photobucket.com/user/snowtrooper_napseeker/media/Cantina_diorama/cantina20150930_205315u.jpg.html)

And sorry about the poor quality of the photos, I've only got a tablet to use as my digital camera and it isn't exactly the highest quality camera - it probably didn't help that the lighting of my apartment is quite dim.

This time I decided to do a Lego diorama - Mos Eisley street & cantina. Most of the build was done using 2 of set "75052 Mos Eisley Cantina" as well as additional parts from "9516 Jabba's Palace" and "75020 Jabba's Sail Barge". A good 80% of the minifigs are kitbashed from various other figures (that was the hardest/longest part). Unfortunately Lego hasn't done a whole lot of the more unique cantina aliens, so I had to stick to mainly human characters. I got as many aliens as I could do while still having them look fairly accurate.

I am now facing the worst part of do a diorama - having to take it all apart again after spending all these hours building it!

(Note: in case it matters - just did some editing of my text past the midnight timestamp)

What's the current resolution of your photos?  You can always use a free image viewer like irfanview, which has built-in image resizing and resaving...

Okay, I think I got it.

Not very professional looking, but this was a Daddy-Daughter project put together over a couple afternoons. We had fun painting, picking out figures and putting things together.

Admiral Ackbar's mini-army of Leias trying to free Han Solo from the Stormtroopers. With a little help from the giant Chewie, and sneaky Wicket & R2.

More photos coming...

awesome, awesome stuff everyone!

From my count we have 10 contestants so there will be 10 prizes.

Now how should we vote? My thinking is to have everyone rate the dios from 1 (best) to 10. The person with the fewest points gets to pick a prize first and then so on.

Maybe we should have the contestants vote too? (obviously not for their own submission).

I am open to other suggestions as well and will list the 10 prizes on Monday (you guys know 2 of them so far).

Might be easier if folks voted for their "top 3", and then you distributed the rest of the prizes as you see fit - just concerned about someone feeling down about receiving a low ranking......

And please - NO VOTES FOR JJ (not that I would have earned any  :rollfloorlaffsmiley:  ), mine was just for fun - the prizes are for everyone else.  :u:

I could see a "top 3" or "top 5" voting system working with Sanjai's reverse points system, 3pts for 1st/1pt for 3rd, and then as you said the remainder decided by Sanjai.  The voting could be kept anonymous by having people PM Sanjai with their votes and then noting "PM sent" or "Votes submitted" within the thread.  I would have a hard time believing anyone here would question Sanjai's honesty in tallying the votes.

Stop underplaying your dio JJ, personally I think it's great!  I think everyone that submitted did an awesome job and it's cool seeing everyone's dedication to the hobby.

A vote by PM seems appropriate. I would simply list these by order (#1 would go first on the list, #2 second, etc. etc.). Keep it simple. The best part is already over and done (the best part IMO was to work on these dioramas!!  :) )

Else, it could also be put on the Snowtroopers.ca Facebook page, however I don't know if there's enough visibility on this page...

Okay, thinking about it, I agree with Thirdfloor, you would need a points system to ease up the process. I don't know however who would be allowed to vote. Thought it was interesting that the contestants not be allowed to vote (I personally hate voting LOL), but I don't know if they'd be enough troopers to vote in this case...

Or it could be a small 3-4 people jury formed among the rest of the troopers, with Sanjai presiding the process and having the final say in the selection, based on certain criteria. It would also be perfectly ok IMHO.  As long as I don't have to run 100 meters or swim for hours like an athlete, I don't mind. LOL :)

What has been done in the past contests?

There seems to be only about 11 people in the mix of things here or who have shown interest in this...the 10 people who submitted something and Sanjai.  How about that's our jury right there, with the idea that you can't vote for your own work. You can base it on whatever points system you then want and go from there.

Anyways, just an idea!

No one said you can't vote, on the contrary, it would make sense to have everyone on Snowtroopers vote. Well, at least to me, this is our "community", so I'd say every active forum member would be allowed to vote if they want to. :-)

the last one we did had a small "jury" of 3 or so people.

My concern is that we won't have many non-contestants wanting to vote.

So, let's see how many lurkers on here would be willing to participate. If you weren't a contest and are willing to vote please let me know on here. I will give it until Tuesday morning to see how many names we get.

ok, the votes are in!

First, a big thank you to everyone who took the time to participate with their wonderful creations as well as those who voted. Like all of you, sw played a big role in my life and I am grateful to have a forum dedicated to Canadians where we can chat about our obsession : )

This was a close one. We had 4 people who were battling for top spot. Our top winner was WHITE ELEPHANT. Congrats dude!

And the next 3 (in order) were:

2. Jedi Patrick
3. Darth Mink
4. Third Floor

I will contact each of you individually to talk about your prize options.

I will be in touch with the rest of the contestants as well, so check your pms in the days to come.

Whatever prizes go unclaimed will be given to charity as part of a xmas drive I participate in each year.

Again, thanks to everyone and I hope you all had as much fun as I did!

WOOOWWW!!! COOOL!!! :artoo:  :D

A huge thanks for this contest, this is amazing!!

And a congratulations to White Elephant!! Your diorama is simply AWESOME!! I wish I had the time and skills to refine mine to bring it to that level!! Didn't want to say anything before the votes were tallied, but I must say your diorama is sitting at another level completely!!! You'll need to explain to all how you achieve this marvel! Everything's so sharp and neat I would dare anyone to say it's not a real toy playset!!!!!  :)` :love0030:

Again, thanks for this contest. It was kinda a nice kick in the a** to finally get me going rather than day dreaming to one day find the time to work on something real...  :)

Oh wow.  All the submissions were so good, and it's really about the fun of making it.  I dunno what to say...I guess. Wow. I guess the only thing I can say, is that I promise to keep rocking and rolling and to keep making better dioramas. It seems we make these scenes...and sometimes...they're considered childish or something by some people...but I don't think that's true. These dios we make can be better...they can help...they really can, I mean it.  We can always do better -- and I'll keep trying if you keep trying so let's keep ROCKING AND ROLLING.

Thanks alot!
