A couple Montréal buddies of mine from the forum here are avid collectors of Star Wars autographs. Whenever there's a SW film actor appearing at a local Ontario convention, I'll usually pop by and pick some up for them.

For today's adventure, I hit up Hamilton Comic Con to meet Mr. Paul Blake (the late Rodian bounty hunter Greedo) and Mr. Tim Rose (of Admiral Ackbar fame). Usually I go to these shows on my own, but today I brought along my wife and 2 girls. They were real troopers standing in the lineups with me, and when we got to meet the celebrated guests they were rewarded for their efforts. Both guys were super nice, very pleasant and in good humour. They chatted and joked with us, and after our business was complete, they each took a special interest in the kids (my oldest girl had her Sabine Wren mask on and a Star Wars shirt).

Paul Blake pulled out special mini-photos, signed and personalized them for each girl, chatting with them the whole time. Tim Rose had a similar item set aside for kids - he had found an Ackbar meme on the internet that said "It's a Trump!" and was signing them with the note "On One Knee". It was his small form of support for the recent protesters in the US (NFL or otherwise). Anyways, I don't usually go in to meet actors for myself, so it's nice when it can still be a pleasant experience. If you ever get the chance to see these guys, they're very nice to talk to. It'd still put Jeremy Bullock (Boba Fett) slightly ahead of them, but only just.

Here's a pic of what my girls received:

Wampa Cave / ToyFair 2017
« on: February 18, 2017, 09:02:39 PM »
In case you didn't know, it's ToyFair weekend once again.

As usual, not a boatload of Star Wars revealed, but they did give a taste of their 40th anniversary special for the 6" line:

http://thefwoosh.com/2017/02/hasbro-star-wars-black-toy-fair-2017

Not sure how I feel about these. I collect 6", but for $30 each you're darn right I open them. I'm not really excited about vintage carded 6" figures, especially since they're pretty much all just repacks. I'm not gonna drop the cash to display these in package. The only figures I would (and did) do that for was TVC. I'll probably just pick up the Death Squad Commander, Jawa, maybe Vader, and possibly Leia again for the corrected head sculpt.

Of course, no 3.75" at all.

Another fan site that I rarely visit anymore has hinted at some upcoming figures for the 3.75" SA line:
- Old Man Luke

- Zal Dinnes (female pilot from Rogue One)
- ERG repack again

The Black Series (2013-???) / Possible vintage packaging for the 6" line?
« on: December 07, 2016, 09:50:28 PM »
Looks like there is something special planned for at least the 6" line in 2017 to celebrate the 40th anniversary:

http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-026185&page=top%2Fsearch%2Flist%3Fs_keywords%3Dstar+wars+black+series%24pagemax%3D40%24getcnt%3D0%24pagecnt%3D1

Maybe these will be in some type of vintage-style packaging (similar to the vintage 3-pack boxes perhaps?) My only real hang-up though would be that they're likely to be all repacks. Cool for vintage packaging collectors, but for openers they'd probably be a pass, especially at the price they are.

Either that, or Hasbro will drop the ball and have them in some ugly, generic "special anniversary" line look packaging.

Knowing Hasbro's track record these days, my money's on the second option, haha.

OR, could it be?! The highly anticipated Star Wars Angry Birds 6" line?!  :speechless-smiley-004:

I really hope they are planning even a short TVC-packaging line for the SA 3.75" figures for 2017 though. I've bought just one measly 3.75" figure since they went WM exclusive.

If anyone is in desperate need of these babies, I can get limited numbers ordered in to my US address. They are $19.99 each and it's free shipping within the States, so the only additional fees would be state tax, currency conversion and a small portion of the package fee at my mail location. I try to keep my package pickup trips to about $100 max value to avoid customs fees, which usually works so likely no extras there. You just pay the Canada Post or come get from me.

So that's gonna be about $29 CAD each, excluding shipping (and hopefully no customs).

Let me know asap if interested, who knows how long they'll be in stock online. I only ask that you keep to max 2-per-person, and it's first-come first-served, as I'm willing to do maybe 2 orders of up to 5 figures each, so 10 total.

Those of you who got their 6" Proto-Fetts from me are familiar with the process. If there's people who live near each other or meet up from time-to-time, I could combine shipping to one location to save a bit of cash.

NOTE - In case you have it confused with the regular-release Scarif Squad Leader, it's this figure that I'm talking about:

Other Star Wars Toys & Collectibles / Star Wars Bandai kits
« on: July 22, 2016, 03:40:30 PM »
I was unimpressed by the news late in 2015 that Hasbro would no longer be utilising vac-metal on their upcoming 6" C-3PO. Then we heard that that 3PO would be the red-armed version from Episode 7, which I have zero interest in, and that it would likely not come with extra OT parts. So, I decided to look for other options, and stumbled upon the new model kits that Bandai sells in Japan. These kits are highly detailed and offer a decent amount of articulation. They do not require glue, and paint is purely optional.

I was so impressed that I bought 8 of the kits, even though I was initially only looking for a vac-metal 3PO to use in my planned 6" shelf (once I finally get around to setting it up). The prices I found were quite reasonable, averaging in the $20-$30 range shipped, from an ebay seller in Japan, and shipped very quickly. The OT kits I bought are Stormtrooper, Sandtrooper, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, C-3P0, and R2-D2 / R5-D4. I also picked up 2 of the ST sets, Phasma and R2-D2 / BB-8. Even though I wasn't really looking to have any ST figures in my collection, I couldn't pass up a vac-metal Phasma, and I also wanted an extra R2 mold to customise the paint into a different astromech (easily done with a model kit).

Up first was 3PO. I ended up adding a little bit of paint in some of the detail work, mainly the abdominal wiring, with a bit on his hands and inside his backplate (which is removable). While the kit comes with parts to do pretty much any OT version of 3PO (like dangling eyeball, restraining bolt, dented head casing, etc) I decided to go with a clean, vanilla version. Here are some photos:

Video Games / Lego Dimensions Series 2
« on: June 11, 2016, 10:42:00 PM »
So E3 is coming up this week, and ahead of the show comes a trailer and list for the next round of Lego Dimensions expansion sets. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGT9PrwRHdY

At this point I guess it's now obvious who the target market is for this, what with the expansions being heavily weighted by 80's entertainment. Here's a list of the new franchises that are coming up:
- Harry Potter
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
- Gremlins
- Ghostbusters 2016
- Mission Impossible
- The LEGO Batman Movie
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- The Goonies
- Teen Titans Go!
- LEGO City Undercover
- Knight Rider
- The A-Team
- The Powerpuff Girls
- Beetlejuice
- E.T. The Extraterrestrial
- Adventure Time

From an Amazon posting, it looks like the first wave will be:
- Ghostbusters 2016 Story Pack $50 (includes a new build for the portal base, and I'm assuming a longer story mode than most)
- Mission: Impossible Level Pack $30 (Ethan Hunt, IMF Sport Car, IMF Scrambler motorcycle)
- Adventure Time Level Pack $30 (Finn the Human, Jakemobile, Ancient War Elephant)
- Adventure Time Team Pack $25 (Jake the Dog, Lumpy Space Princess, Lumpy Car, BMO)
- Harry Potter Team Pack $25 (Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, Enchanted Car, Hogwarts Express)
- The A-Team Fun Pack $12 (B.A. Baracus, B.A.'s Van)

Wampa Cave / Bootleg 6" Darth Maul
« on: December 08, 2015, 03:48:46 PM »
Not to deflect attention from the other controversial thread topic of "scalping", but apparently there is a fairly high-quality Chinese bootleg of the 6" Darth Maul figure popping up all over ebay right now, for a good price:

http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/content/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=16850

Like scalping, bootlegs can be a polarizing topic in the collecting world. But this could be an option for those who don't have much hope of Hasbro getting around to re-issuing an official 6" Maul (let's face it, with all the new movie stuff that will be released every year for the next who-knows-how-long, I'd say the likelihood is rather slim). I was lucky enough to find one during his initial release, but there are many collectors who never got the chance or came too late to the party. It's up to the individual to decide how they'd want to proceed - pay a scalper/gouger for an original? buy a bootleg? or be content to go without? (or maybe look into the one by S.H. Figuarts)

Just thought I'd bring it to the attention of those who may be interested. Do with as you please.

Expanded Universe - Legacy & the New EU / Tarkin (novel)
« on: September 23, 2015, 11:13:24 PM »
I just finished reading the novel "Tarkin". My Star Wars reading has been a little thin the past couple years, and this one renewed my thirst for consuming more EU reading material. This book had a fairly good OT feel to it, with a bit of PT sprinkled in as it takes place between Episodes 3 and 4. The characterisations were pretty consistent, at least based on the limited screen time that we get to see Tarkin and Vader interact in Episode 4. It was neat to see a few of the more obscure old-time characters show up, such as Admiral Screed from the old "Droids" cartoon.

Overall, I liked this book much more than Luceno's previous SW novel, "Darth Plagueis". The plot progresses more quickly in this story and is more action-based, owing mainly to the fact that it happens over a short period of time. In contrast, "Darth Plagueis" spans several decades and reads almost like a history text, with an ending that everyone knows is inevitable. Luceno dedicates only a few chapters near the beginning of the book for Tarkin's backstory, and then lets the main story take over from there.

This was my first OT-era novel in years, as I've been slowly working my way through the timeline. I am glad I "skipped ahead" to this one, and now am thinking of digging out some more OT-era novels that I've not read through yet. It's a great standalone read for any SW fan, especially those fans of the OT, and Tarkin/Imperials in particular.

Off Topic / ToyStages diorama backdrops
« on: April 08, 2015, 10:25:21 PM »
I just came across these cardboard diorama backdrops that are done by a company called ToyHax. For those familiar with Transformers or GI Joe, they are the same people that do Reprolabels (for TF's) and Cobrastickers (for GI Joe), based out of Hamilton, Ontario. They don't really have anything you could use for a Star Wars backdrop yet (maybe the very generic jungle, swamp, sea and snow ones), but lots for use with other figure lines: http://toyhax.com/mainmenu/index.php?id_category=75&controller=category

Here is a video of Shartimus Prime reviewing them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu4NTE6yMJE&feature=youtu.be

Perfect if you want a quick and easy backdrop for your figures and don't have the time and/or skill to build a nice custom diorama from scratch.
