Wampa Cave / Re: Star wars Toys Sales down
« on: January 20, 2018, 02:36:02 AM »
Kids' interests have changed too much. We (old men) are the only people buying action figures en masse (not to mention comic books) these days.

100% this. ask most 10 year olds what they want for their bday. I bet it will be electronic / video game related.

Or at best...Lego.

Yep, Lego seems to be one of the few go-to toys that has withstood the onslaught of electronics and video games. Heck, it's probably even benefited more from video games, movies etc than most toy brands. The genius of Lego's designers is rivaled only by their marketing department.

I watched them all, and never really had any of the toys as a kid in the 80s (we only ever had Lego growing up).
But they were all very interesting episodes - even the Barbie one - cool to see the history of the toys, companies, etc. and to see interviews with lots of people in the industry, both current and past. If you can take the time, I recommend watching all the episodes, even if you're not a fan of the toyline. Looking forward to the next 4!

I will go with:

Rogue One

LOL, did you put Battlestar Galactica on your Star Wars list? For shame, you know mixing sci-fi franchises is a serious offence!  :rollfloorlaffsmiley:

The kids and I watched the Holiday Special for the first (and will be ONLY) time the other day.
I have toyed with the idea of listing that higher than TFA/TLJ, but I just can't bring myself to do it.
I do equate them with each other as far as my own "head canon" goes - they never happened.

I think for me, the measure of whether a new SW film is good or not is how it makes me feel about the originals. Does it add something or make me look at the OT films in a different way or with greater appreciation? Then it's a good addition to the franchise. It should build up and compliment the originals, not actively try to tear them down and stomp all over them. While one could argue that parts of the prequels messed with the OT a bit, I think overall they made me look at the OT films a bit differently and read some scenes in a new way - ROTS in particular did that. In a similar way, Rogue One helped to raise ANH to a higher level in my mind - it was easily my least favourite of the OT films but now I'd happily put it against any film in the saga.

Rogue One & ANH
some fan films

My daughter liked it, my son hated it.  He likes Rogue One but hates the other movies and wishes Disney had not made them.  He would have rather seen Disney just start making new Star Wars movies and not have messed with the original Disney Characters.

Sounds like your son and I are of the same mind on that. I loved Rogue One, but did not like the ST films. I wish Disney had just moved past the OT characters completely for this trilogy - make it take place a few decades further yet.

My feeling is , I am currently watching Revenge of the Sith on TV as I write this.  It is a Star Wars movie.  The Last Jedi is a movie about Star Wars, it is not a Star Wars movie. That is the best way I can describe how I feel about The Last Jedi.

This is what I thought about Ep7 when it came out. The sequels are movies called "Star Wars" but they are not Star Wars movies.
I felt the same about the Star Trek reboot films too. Except those felt even less like what Star Trek should be.
Call me old and crusty.

Hopefully Ron Howard will be able to get the haters back on side with Solo.

Rumours are Solo is a complete trainwreck and Disney is already bracing for it to bomb.
Of course, rumours are just rumours, but it's already known as "Solo: The Star Wars Story No One Ever Asked For"

For the record, like most here, I liked some parts and hated others. Overall, it's fighting for last place with Ep7 for me. More than ever, I want to know what George Lucas' ideas were for the sequels. I liked the prequels. And I loved Rogue One.

Yeah, I remember that.  It was amazing that it just happened so I was off that day and went to check it out and they were just putting cases of it out.

I just ordered the EE Order 66 4 pack.  They are $39.99 US right now, but $30 shipping for 2 sets.  I just had it sent to my friend in the US so it'll just cost what it'll cost him to ship it to me.

I got 2 of those too - been watching and waiting for it to hit the inevitable discount. It's an awesome price. Luckily I live next to the border so I got them sent to an address there and I'll pick 'em up sometime.

Dorkside Toys has some pretty good discounts right now too.

Wampa Cave / Re: TOPPS Star Wars Card Trader App
« on: November 10, 2017, 01:13:23 PM »
I'll post more on the weekend.

Right now many collectors are "hoarding" because there is a special Monument award on Jan 1st.  Usually you get your name engraved on the back of the card forever.

I'm caught up in the hoarding frenzy.  Yoda.

I do spend $$.  I like chasing rare cards.  I also have cut back and only collect sets that I like.  I was collecting every set but then I realized that I don't really like some sets, so why bother.

I also make my kids play so I can steal their cards.

I wondered what hoarding was all about.
Dang, I never thought of having family members play too and stealing their cards. Maybe I'll load it on my wife's phone and the old phone I gave my kids to play with!

Question: I've figured out that new inserts are released intermittently over time, and that the best chance to pull one is to buy the packs as soon after release as possible. I see the info screen for some packs show a time of day, some show just a day of the week, some nothing - there doesn't seem to be any clear consistency? How do you know for sure when the new stuff hits, or do I just have to keep checking all the time?

So can one of you long-time veterans give me a primer on trading?
I've skimmed through the trade postings in the app, but I'm a bit lost.
Maybe you can fill me in on the shorthand everyone uses, common trade practices, etc, and how to go about actually making the trades.

I've been at it about a month now, and so far using only the free credits I'm at just over 1200 cards, very close to completing the white variants of all 3 current base sets. At the moment I'd be mainly interested in offloading any doubles of the handful of inserts that I have, in exchange for any other inserts. I assume I'll eventually get complete base sets of of at least white, probably blue, and maybe even red just through regular day-to-day pack buying?

Also, do any of you have collecting strategies? Particularly for someone who doesn't plan to spend any real money on it. Anything to watch out for, avoid, or not waste my credits on? So far I've been grabbing packs of cards from the "limited time" sets that pop up so I can get as many of those inserts as possible before they sell out. Then I move on to the open sets. I love packs from sets like Galactic Alphabet and Galactic Fun that are only 2500 credits per pack - can buy twice the number of packs as usual.

UPDATE - added Black Series 6" Elite Praetorian Guards x2 SOLD!

I picked up 2 sets of the Royal Guard 4-pack at eb games today.
Gonna sell off the 2 Elite Praetorian Guards - anyone here interested? Shoot me a PM with an offer. Would also possibly trade for a pair of ERG's or Senate Guards.

Scout Report / Re: TRU - last day to save 15% off entire purchase
« on: October 19, 2017, 08:27:28 PM »
Thanks to you guys, I picked up some Lego sets there today. Got the some advent calendars for my girls since they never seem to go on sale anyways. Friends one was reg price but I think the City was actually 20% off. Also picked up a few of the small SW sets that were on for 20% off. Then another 15% off everything, and on top of that I qualified for the free minifig 4-pack. So worked out pretty well for once, haha.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who learned about this late.  I was at my TRU yesterday and there were no signs posted about the 15% off.  Today there was... but only on a few shelves.

Yet I bought a transformer yesterday and didn't get the 15% off.  Not sure if even TRU knew that they were supposed to be having that sale yesterday, lol. I'm going to go back and see if I can get my receipt adjusted.

The clerks actually have to scan a barcode sheet that they have up at the cash to apply the 15% off. So if the person doesn't know or happens to forget, I'm assuming the system doesn't catch it at all.

so awesome!

what did you think of the con?

It was interesting. Not too small, but definitely not big. Lots of room to move around. A very unique location - we had actually just been to the museum earlier in the summer, so we didn't even really spend any time looking at the planes this time. I'm pretty much at the point now that there's nothing I'm really looking for shopping-wise, so I usually do a quick walkthrough of the floor and that's about it. The main reason I went was to pick up the autographs. I don't think we were there for more than 2 hours. The girls had fun dressing up, and seeing all the cosplay.

I saw these at TRU on the weekend, along with a Chewie lunchbox (it's got fur).
They were on sale too, so keep an eye out if you're interested.
