Wampa Cave / Colbert gets his geek on SW style!
« on: January 11, 2012, 01:54:17 PM »
Check out last night's (Jan 10) Colbert Report to watch him go on a rant about Chewbacca because having him appear at the White House Alice in Wonderland themed Halloween party isn't "canon"!!!

Wampa Cave / Darth Maul Giveaway

Not that I was that excited about this program but just checked online and though Canadians can enter this, it is closed to Quebec residents. Maybe this has been pointed out earlier?

George was on the Daily Show last night promoting Red Tails. Looks like it could be good.

Interesting story about why he had trouble getting it made too.

And he tells Jon Stewart "This is as close as you'll get to Episode 7!" And that's maybe a good thing!  :winking0071:

Vintage Kenner (1978-1985) / Played with toys as collector items
« on: November 24, 2011, 10:36:55 AM »
I am not exactly a vintage collector, I mean, I have all my old toys from when I was a kid and have added pieces to it over the years, trying to at least complete a basic loose vintage figure collection very slowly and not with much effort.

But the other day for some odd reason I decided I would really like to get one of the original die-cast Star Destroyers so I found one cheap on ebay, it included the plastic rebel frigate but wasn't in anything like mint condition.

So it arrives, and I'm happy with it for what I paid. It is chipped, it has what appear to be small spots of rust here and there that I mistook for dirt and dust at first. I guess this is what some refer to as a "beater".

Anyway, the date on the sliding hatch at the bottom of 1979 kind of got me thinking about the obvious: this toy is only a few years younger than I am, it has obviously been played with and has travelled through time and hands and adventures and I wondered this:

Is there any sort of subculture of collectors out there who specifically try to track down used, played with toys because of this history they come with, even if it is only a history we can guess at? So collecting more like an archaeologist I guess than an investor or hoarder? I guess it would also be a "beater" specific collector???

I realize that the main vintage collecting culture seems to be focused on graded items or at least trying to find the closest to pristine copy of carded or loose items but then realized that maybe there might be some part of the hobby I hadn't heard about.

If not, then I might just start it up because I realized this is pretty interesting, looking at toys not as a window on a "fantasy past" when if I'd known what the future would be I could have grabbed a bunch of mint figures off the pegs at a now defunct department store chain and stashed them away but that these toys were meant to be played with and did get played with and got passed around and then end up in the hands of collectors. Kind of like artefacts from other lost cultures. I mean, archaeologists don't focus on finding a tool or something that was made but never used. Well, yes they do in part, but they also need to give time and energy to the ones that did get used and appreciate that history of use and understand the signs of it "engraved" on the artefacts themselves. Anyway....maybe I'm just being a flake but it got me thinking. Or maybe I'm just ignorant on the subject and this kind of focus has been going on for years?

Don't know if there any fans out there but this popular, smart, hilarious, original show is suddenly in danger of going bye-bye. But someone has started a petition if you care:

I know I do... :'(

Previous Hasbro 3.75" Star Wars Lines (1995-2015) / Taun Taun 2011
« on: November 08, 2011, 12:04:14 PM »
I received the Search for Luke Skywalker battle pack today from someone in the states and opened it. Haven't had much time to really explore what it is and isn't capable of but one thing that surprised me was the "super glued" on belly section that gave me the hope it could open for a second. I quickly poked around on rebelscum's forums to find that no it cannot and those that have pried it open have found it can't really hold much. But interesting nonetheless!

Does anyone here use this service? I got a call for it the other day and I am signed up for the 30 day trial. You buy gift cards for HBC stores online and save 20 percent. So a 25 dollar gift certificate to Zellers would be $20. I'm almost thinking of cancelling it now but I thought i could use it to get those vintage 3 packs at 20 percent off! Just curious what other people's experience of it might be.

Off Topic / Mac Toast how to burn AVCHD to dual layer DVD
« on: September 29, 2011, 11:28:59 AM »
Does anyone know how to take an iso file (with BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders) and burn it in Roxio Toast to a dual layer DVD? I keep finding posts that say "you can..." but never a step by step "how to..." guide. If I open it using Toast it goes to the Copy/Image File menu and from there I can choose in the drop down the media type. But is it really as simple as this? I want to take Harmy's Despecialized versions of the OT and get them to play in by Bluray player at 1920x1080 and I can only find the PC instructions for this. Anyone?

Star Wars Movies & TV shows / A New Hope - Blu ray
« on: September 20, 2011, 12:55:37 PM »
First impression: lots of grain or noise especially on the more "uniform" backgrounds. Faces, characters etc are often sharp however. I wonder how much of this is encoding issues or the source files.

Here's something I found on

"It's fairly common knowledge that the Blu-rays were mastered from the same HD scans that were used for the DVD release back in 2004. That means these transfers are at least 8 years old - very far from state of the art. To make matters worse, those scans were done at near HD resolution - not the 4K, 6K, or even 8K of current negative scans for film restoration and BD release purposes, but essentially 2K (something like1828x1556 for a scope film image), which was eventually exported to 480p for DVD (and later 1080p for Blu-ray)."

Off Topic / Walmart again
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:09:08 PM »
So I tried to get Walmart to match the BOGO4$1 sale on Marvel and SW figures but it was a no go. They told me they only do "item price" matches and since their figures are already 9.92 each that's 7 cents cheaper than TRUs starting price. They don't do any sort of offer of buying something to get something else (2 for 1 etc) or so they say. So now I know that (some) Walmarts won't give a "percent off" sale unless the exact price is listed in the flyer (so "All Marvel toys 30 percent off" doesn't fly at the Walmart I spoke with) and now neither does buying one and getting the other at a $1 or whatever.

Wampa Cave / Super Quick Poll: One question!
« on: September 16, 2011, 12:45:26 PM »
Without popping a DVD/BR in, what have you always heard Luke scream when Vader threatens to turn "sister" to the dark side?  You know, "If you will not be turned, then perhaps she will..."
