Since this has been resurrected, I'll update my answer.

OTHER - specifically EU.

It has given too many hack authors who couldn't sell a book on their own, freedom to desecrate the characters we grew up loving with pitiful stories that at times outright contradict the plotlines Lucas instilled in his great Saga.

Many times these unimaginative 'writers' can't even come up with something new or unique.  How many more lame generic Jedi do we need.  Bastila Shan?  Please?  Yay, a female human with a lightsaber. *YAWN*  Yellow sabers?  Lucas has directly said there are only blue, green, and red, with the exception of Mace Windu's purple.

How about the ultimate excuse to sell a story?  Let's kill Chewbacca!  Yeah!  That'll sell my books, even though it's a steaming pile of crap.

Have fun flaming me guys. :)

It's not only the EU stuff that is written by hacks... I tried reading ROTS.... God awful stuff... couldn't get through the first chapter it was so bad.

Worst thing to happen to the SW Universe... um, I don't know, George Lucas circa-1990 to 20(XX)?   That would nicely encapsulate all the things that I think turned many enthusiastic SW fans into disillusioned cynics (myself I'm about halfway there  :mad0177:).

Late 1990s Lucas gave us: midichlorians, Jar-Jar/Gungans/Boss Nass, Greedo shooting first, kiddifying RotJ in the SE even further with that ridiculous Jabba palace musical number, and of course bad writing/direction for the prequels.

I'm okay with the Holiday Special. Unlike the prequels, the HS can be ignored and safely regarded as non-canon by 99.9999999999999% of the fans (with the exception of the Boba Fett cartoon which can be treated as canon as far as I'm concerned).

You can't ignore the prequels and the way they alter your perspective of the OT forever (as Lucas himself once stated they would prior to the release of TPM): Vader, the Emperor, Yoda and Boba will never be as mysterious or enchanting as they once were when WE imagined a much cooler origin for these characters; the same can be said of Luke and Leia's parents, or the Jedi in general (who would've dared think either could turn out to be so ...boring?)

Probably the only thing that was truly done well by Lucas in the prequels is the Clone Wars and the clonetroopers. That is probably why we all want dem clone figures... they and to a lesser extent, Darth Maul, were the only genuinely good things in a sea of mediocrity.

EDIT: Actually Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan in RotS and Ian McDiarmid are also worth honorable mentions...

Here's a novel choice - the internet. If we didn't have each others' negativity to feed off, who knows what the overall perception of Star Wars would be these days. My suspicion is that it would be more positive.

I don't treally get into the Ep.I-III.... but my 8 yr.old son sees
them much the same as I saw Ep.IV-VI...... freakin' awesome!

SW was a cool movie made for kids- & that is George Lucas' own volition.

Several items set me off about the Franchise....
boith come from what we see & what we didn't see.

01. Where the crap did the CLONE WARS go!??!?!
........ we were led to the conlusion that it was this epic battle
........ & we get a cartoon 2 & 5 mins at a time.

02. These Jedi are seen a mythically powerful- of the 4 Jedi sent to dispatch Palpatine
....... 3 were "offed" within seconds- SEK-UNDS!!

03. In reading Rolling Stone Magazine we find the fights between
...... Yoda vs Sid / Obi vs Ani were 2 hrs added together.
...... I believe Speiberg was handed the task to direct the YvS fight
....... & it clocked in at like 80+ mins

..... seeing these fights would included in Ep.III would completely REDEEM the prequels!
& YES- it would redeem Jar2, Shootin first,Jar2 , HS, Jar2, Midichlorions, Jar2, Time between the Prequels, Jar2, EU that I have never read....
& if I hadn't previously mentioned... Jar2!

Cheers

I voted for other and here is why: I was only a year old when the holiday special came out so therefore I have no recollection of ever having seen it; as far as Boba's cheesy yelp, it isn't any worse than Vader's nooooo in ROTS; with the Gungans I don't have a problem with them. So what is the worst thing to ever happen to the Star Wars Universe is HASBRO CANADA >:( :mad0137: :mad0177:  Need I say more.

There are many things that I dont like that have happened in Star Wars and of course many more that I do like.  One that might be of interest and many others probably dont share is Jango Fett.

Boba Fett was a cool looking character in the OT and was little more than an extra.  The lack of info about him made him mysterious and interesting.  I wish they wouldn't have jumped all over the phenomenon of Boba Fett, which fans have to be credited for creating, and used it in the prequels.  I detest the Boba Fett as a child and just feel like Jango Fett has no right to be the prequeals.  The just used somebody who was sure to be popular and sure to be marketable and worked him into the story.  If they had to put Jango Fett in, at least they could have left out young Boba Fett.

Sorry, but out with Jango Fett ...

... please be nice

This is a VERY good point. I recall prior to discovering the Trek newsgroups that I didn't mind the stupidness of the first 2 seasons of TNG. Once trekkers started to congregate and mercilessly deconstruct every episode, it made me into a way more critical viewer (not necessarily a bad thing).  There is probably a point when being constructively critical goes into overreaching negativity and just builds on itself since the filmmaker cannot really do much to fix the addressed problems. At least not at the pace of internet talkbacks!

Still, when there is an obvious mass of negativity towards a certain area, we do know that the filmmakers take much more serious notice and in some cases, make changes to resolve the complaints. This is why I firmly believe we'll see the anamorphic, cleaned up version of the true OT on DVD (or better) someday... if not for the constant complaining, Lucas might be left in his self-deluded world that the majority of fans love his changes made in the special editions.

The Holiday Special Hands Down. George Lucas still cringes as do many people that were kids in the seventies like me.

The Prequels .. (but bear with me.. i love Episodes 2 and 3) ..

TPM, AOTC and ROTS were rushed WAY too much and the stories of each were lacking ... notice how the Classic trilogy flowed nicely from one flick to the next (more or less) ... the prequels were large jumps and rushed plots which really hurt Star Wars IMO ....
