Mace's purple lightsaber
« on: February 24, 2005, 11:13:50 PM »

an ionteresting little tidbit of info.

Samuel L. Jackson landed the role of Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequels after mentioning that he would like to work with George Lucas on a talk show. "Somebody on his staff heard it, and he invited me over to see if I was serious," Jackson recalled. "I told him I was willing to be a Stormtrooper I just wanted to be in the movie... I only asked for one thing specifically, and I actually got it, which was cool."

What was it? "I asked if I could have a purple lightsaber. George thought about it and said, 'Well, we only have two colors: The good guys have one, and the bad guys have another.' But when I went back for some pickup shots, he had one for me. And he said, 'I've already caused a lot of controversy on the Star Wars Web site because of this why did you want purple?' I just figured a purple light would help me find all the lint on my robes so I could pick it off."

I'm confused with that statement though because there has always been 3 colors if you think about it.  Luke had both a green and a blue saber then Red for bad.  So why would he say only two colors doesn't make sence.

I believe EU stands for Expanded Universe (those things outside the movies- focus on books, comics etc). (oh if I'm wrong....we'll both know it right away. The guys here are very responsive.)

I think Lucas had the two colours for Ben and Luke's sabers for ANH and red for Vader for contrast.  When you can have more jedis around - he was keeping the colours consistant but why not yellow or purple or any other colour for contrast.  The story is that jedi select their crystal for their own lightsaber and is a unique choice - the sith use red crystals from a different mine or something - hence the scary red colour.  Most crystals are green or blue -but a few rare purple or yellow ones pop up.

Not that this is important, but the Sith actually make their crystals - they are synthetic.

Well, according to the books (if I remember correctly) it is using basic elements, a small heating element/furnace, and then using the force to make the structure precisely the way they want it.

I read that Luke actually got a green saber in ROTJ because a blue one would have been difficult to see (and rotoscope i presume) against the backdrop of the Tatooine sky.

On the Bonus Material DVD for the Star Wars Trilogy, the trailers for ROTJ (some of them) show Luke with a Blue Lightsaber.  So intially, I guess he was going to have a blue one.

It's also the sound a teenage girl makes when she sees something gross.
