Boarder customs question??
« on: December 05, 2006, 01:15:13 AM »

Does anyone know how declaring a gift over the Canadian boarder works? Do you have to pay any duties on the gift? Need proof of gift, such as reciept? :tongue0024:

In that case you would need to have a reciept because it would have to be declared as part of your goods coming back.  For customs there would be no way to show that it was a gift and not someting you bought and are just claiming it is a gift.  If you mail it across they may not charge you customs depending on teh value and what the item is if you mark it as a gift

If you dont have a recepit, you can still say its a gift, BUT they will bug the hell out of you for a price.

I was in the US for my birthday, and got lots of gifts. They kept asking me for a price, I kept telling them these were gifts for my b-day. After 5 minutes of telling them this, I just threw a number out, and then they said no problem.

So they just need a number.  So I can say my MR Falcon was just a gift and give em some number...   Haha J/J wish I wasnt. Thanks for the info LordJawas, this will be my first time to pick up a item and bring it back home. :)

After I threw out a number, I was worried that they might tell me to sit down, and they need to look into it. Cause I know it was more then what I said.

I didnt like the idea that they were looking at the items, cause most of them were gag gifts, 30th birthday.

I talked to someone else later, who works at the boarder, and he said, they just need a number, most of the times they want to see what you say. So ya, throw out a number, but be carefull on the number....and DONT TELL THEM I TOLD YA...lol

Just make up a dummy receipt. We all know what the MR Falcon is worth. Customs don't. If you bought it from some guy in the states... tell him to make a receipt. Tell him to mark it a reasonable amount. If you stay in the states for less than a week...you're entitled to $200 US. You know what I did with my R2. I got the seller to make me receipt... I didn't have a problem with customs.

Well a tip for anyone who buys from the States, I saved myself a few bucks picking up across the boarder and bringing it back myself. Dang Brokerage fees got me doing this, but well worth it with the savings. I will be doing this with the larger ticket items from now on!

I've been very lucky at crossing the border, for the most part.  I just declare a slightly deflated amount and the nice customs officers are usually happy enough with it.  Got my Target shuttle through no problems on my last visit.
