What gamconsole should I get
« on: July 07, 2008, 09:15:22 AM »

I am looking to get a game console
What should I get,
I am thinking maybe a PS 3
I know I can hook it up to my normal TV (Don't have HD yet) and play games, but Will I be able to watch Blue Ray DVDs?. I know there isn't much point because you need a HD TV to view the detail but, If I start getting Blue Ray disks can I watch them anyway or will they not run on a normal TV?.

They will run on a normal TV through the A/V cables that come with the PS3.   So u can start your collection now if u want  :)`

Familyman, there's a whole thread about game systems up and running - maybe a quick read of that will help you out:

I was keen on getting a console last year about this time and am very thankful that I didn't. I saved up for longer and bought a dual core HP laptop with blu ray player, HDMI out, 7.1 surround out and a kickin' video card. Now I am rockin' blu rays and HD downloads to my Samsung LCD as well as playing all the latest games. Mind you, there may not be identical game selection as there is for XBox 360 and the PS3 but you do get most of the better ones. Besides, you don't have time to play te crappy games. So playing those that come up for the PC helps you weed out the crappier games. Also, if the game is developed for the Xbox and put out on the PC platform, PC players are able to go head to head with Xbox players on the LIVE network. That's pretty damn cool.

Here's a link to my laptop: http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/hp-pavilion-hdx-entertainment-notebook-pc.aspx

It's a bit of an older review so many of the specs have been upgraded (for instance, it says it comes with an HD-DVD drive, but that has since be swapped out for a Blu Ray).

Anyway, that's my two cents. Hope it gives you some food for thought.    :r2d2line:

Here are some strong/bad points about consoles:

Live
Wii (200$): easy to use, family-friendly.
Exclusive games: anything Mario, anything Pokemon, Super Smash Bros.
PS3( 300$): Uses Playstation Network for online (free)
Exclusive games: Killzone 2, Drake's Fortune
Xbox(200-300$) 360: The most common game system, it uses Xbox. (60$ year)
Exclusive games: Gears of War series, Fable series.
PC(?-100,000): The most flexible platform, and also the most customizable. You can use Steam to download games directly to your harddrive. Cost to build a desktop PC varies, but average is 800$ for a gaming system.
Exclusive games: S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Crysis, alot of RTS games, FPS games, Racing games.
