Thanks for the link jj. Looks like the parts with Arya are behind in the show compared to where she was in the books. They all merge together in my brain now, so I don't remember where people are in which book.

Interesting comments brianakarobin. I totally understand your distinction between reading and watching. I find that things I find distasteful are easier to handle when reading the written word as opposed to seeing it graphically on screen. It just seems more real when seen than read about. For me it's the gore and violence that usually makes me squirm.

I actually don't find that the book emphasizes nudity and sex much more than the books. I think that people just aren't used to that level in a mainstream series and so focus on that. I read some criticisms earlier this season about some excessive nudity compared to previous seasons and I just had to laugh. Did they not watch the other seasons? I didn't find it any different. Now don't get me wrong, there is a lot of it (perhaps excessive at times, but some could argue the same about the books), but I just don't think that it's emphasized that much more than in the books. Of course, as I've stated, my memories of the books are fuzzy!! :)

Though I'm sure the nudity doesn't hurt to "sell" the show I feel it along with the use of harsh language and brutal violence all unite to create a very intense and visceral portrayal of a world that has not been as sterilized from living life closer to death (and therefore life) as our own. Though it may not be faithful to our historical mediaeval times it definitely feels like a different era that would have a strong affinity to it from what I have read/heard/seen (caught a recap of something on Vlad the Impaler recently and immediately thought of Game of Thrones), with a different set of values than today based on a different sense of human worth and human rights (or rather lack thereof...). The nudity is rarely air-brushed pornography IMO, it often portrays people with very realistic bodies in both pleasant and not so pleasant situations though often yes they are female though thematically it works with the lack of equality in this story-verse. I never see it as there merely to titillate.

It is definitely there in the books - it's not just your fuzzy memory!  However, where in the books, it might just mention that they are having a meeting in a brothel, on TV, you then see the meeting, and everything that is around it, which is often naked women.  Admittedly, I have never frequented brothels in Westeros, but as Sinkie describes, the books have a middle-ages type of feel.  I suspect (although I have never frequented them, either!) that brothels in the middle ages did not have people walking around naked. Revealing clothing perhaps, and behind closed doors, I'm sure lots was happening, but out in the main area where people were eating and meeting?  I suspect not.
In any case, I do suspect the show is faithful to the books overall, even with sexuality and nudity.  As I said, though, for me, it's just not something I'm going to watch, but I do enjoy the books.  I really like (and also hate!) how the main characters are not safe - something often lacking in Star Wars EU novels and comics over the years.

Yeah, I'm sure if there had been no nudity I may still have liked it, but the sort of "anything goes" aesthetic seems to suit the story to me. It is obvious they don't live in a Christian world (where nudity may have been a sin) but rather in something where hedonism seems to have its place and especially where the rich are concerned seems much more flaunted and tolerated. The "no one is safe" thing is really great. Like Walking Dead in that way I guess though I am not suggesting either copied the other. I just can't imagine it being anywhere near as entertaining without all the "harsher" elements in place.

Halfway through Season 6 - which is based on written material that has not yet been published!!! I can't believe the show finally ran ahead of the books. The last 2 episodes have been extremely strong, after what I would have called a lukewarm start to the season. Any new thoughts on what's happening in Westeros?
