US WalMart Jabba's Thone Set
« on: August 26, 2010, 12:40:56 PM »

Just got back from a week-long trip the US that took me through 5 states, ending in Minnesota where my brother lives & works. Along the way I managed to check Walmart stores in a variety of states (and demographic areas, let me just say that).

Finally, in Battle Creek Michigan on our return trip home I was rewarded by finding the very last Jabba's Throne set in that store - the only one I saw on my entire journey. The price was 38.99 US (or thereabouts, it may have been 38.88) which was about $10 more than I thought it was going to cost. The extra $10 didn't slow me down at all.

Today I'm home and have opened the set. The pics are available all over the net & I'm not good at doing them so I'll leave you to search out your own.

Overall Impression (Once it's out of the package & set up): excellent. I'm a big fan of the set & I'll get into the details here, piece by piece...

Jabba himself.

In looking at the photos, I had been concerned about the look of the Jabba toy, seeing the upper body as not matching up well with the lower part. In real life I find this nowhere near as noticeable as I did in the photos. Jabba himself, the entire toy, is very soft and rubbery - a great departure from the rigid Hutts from years past. His details are great - right from the slice on his tail to his forearm tattoo. He holds his pipe without issue, and there is NO big impression in his mouth that looks silly with nothing (tongue or pipe) stuffed in it.

EDITED: The head & arms are NOT as rubbery as the bottom - in re-reading this it sounds misleading. Also, the impression of the head being plopped onto the body is disguised well by having the arms down, and by looking down on the toy. Looking up at him - on a high shelf for example - will show off the mismatch.

Jabba's throne.

Is fantastic. It has casters on the bottom that allow for the rolling motion observed in ROJ. The details are great, including real metal rings to tie Oola to if one so chooses. It is very heavy, adding to that feeling of value that I wondered about while forking over the dough. The packet of pillows & blankies adds some nice variety to the scene.

Salacious Crumb

Is a bit small, but actually does have some articulation this time. For me, the vintage version will always be in scale (even though I know it's not) so I've had to overcome the tininess of all toy versions of this guy since 1985. My only issue with this one in particular is that he's quite pinkish, whereas I've always seen him as a bit more of an orangey colour - call it Han's Hoth Coat syndrome if you like.

Oola

Is a very nice upgrade from the previous version. They didn't lay off the articulation with her at all - everything down to the ankles seems well done. She is quite "fine" - ie slim in the limbs - but they did a fairly good job of disguising the joints. Her colouring and outfit are very accurate, although the black faux-leather bikini bottom is quite diaperish.

All in all, I'm 100% behind supporting this set if you have the means. It's by far the best Jabba I've seen since the vintage version which I'm still a big, big fan of. Hopefully this will come to Canada for us by Christmas.

You are a lucky guy jjreason. I am really in anticipation for this set. Hopefully it does come before Christmas. And in larger numbers, I have heard that Walmarts in the States are only getting 2 or 3 at a time.

I've noticed with Walmarts resets there's no price shelf tage for Jabba or the At At.Maybe they will be part of their flex space.

Has this made it's way into Canadian wal-marts yet? I've been looking once a week and still no luck.

It hasn't shown up yet. But sources say in the next few weeks or so. So keep your eyes open.

This guy is great. He is an amazing addition to anyones collection. Hasbro really out did themselves with this set. Glad that they included the Dias and all the pillows are just a great touch. I am glad that I was able to get this set,a nd I am glad that Hasbro Canada was able to bring a bunch in for us Canadian collectors.

My Jabba has some fairly severe belly warpage.  His bong stand is pretty warped too.  Anybody else seeing anything like this, or should I just exchange it for another one?

I just checked mine. My Jabba's belly is good, and my stand is normal too.
