Star Wars Blu-ray
« on: August 12, 2011, 05:08:09 PM »

So with the release of Star Wars onto Blue-Ray coming up, I was wondering how many troopers were planning on picking up a copy for themselves? (or not picking up)

I am picking up the OT and PT Blu-ray sets. At first,I wanted to get the Complete Saga, but I just can't seem to get past the cover art they have for it. I thought it might grow on me, but it hasn't happened yet.

Complete Saga for me!

I am one of the few who actually he very little beef with the prequels, so I want the whole set.  Ok, maybe I had a slight beef with jar jar...

Already preordered it on Amazon...

Even though I don't have a Blu-ray player, I am considering buying the complete saga - for the inevitable day when our DVD player dies.

I did the same thing Wedge. I waited until our DVD player kicked the bucket. Which was just before last Christmas. Blu-ray players have come down so much in price since they first started showing up. When you decide to pick one up, look up reviews online for the certain models you have in mind. I have heard a few stories of crappy players.

Hmm, one question. Are the special features different on the complete saga set, then they are on the individual sets?

I am too lazy to look it up, but I was under the impression that they are different. I thought there was an extra disc(s) or something that would only be available with the complete saga set...

Of course, the real benefit of Blu-ray will be lost on me until I can afford a nice new TV as well...  :speechless-smiley-004:

Hmm, depending on what is on that 'exclusive' disc. I might have to consider getting the Saga set. Only if those extras are worth it to me though. I'll look into it soon. Thanks Wedge.

Ah, someone over at Rebelscum did my work for me - see, laziness does have it's payoffs!

As I thought, the Complete Saga is a 9-disc set, with the special features on the 3 extra discs. The separate sets only have 3 discs each.

Hmm, thanks for the link Wedge. You may have changed my mind with that bit of info.

I was NOT going to get anything, banking on a future release of a better set with HD original original trilogy discs or at least waiting to see the reviews come in.

But since recently trying to watch ROTJ from my DVD collection (the bonus OOT versions) and finding it unable to be played to fill my HD screen, I have started to reconsider but with both reservation and frustration over what I which versions I would be watching in HD (I want to poke my eyes with a pair of Ki Adi Mundi action figures when I see that horrific new Jabba's palace musical number!).

And of course the bonus stuff looks like it could be great, especially the vintage making of docs! So I'm still on the fence, leaning more towards the Saga but only because it would have the bonus stuff. So if I get it, the planners at Lucasfilm did their job and succeeded in getting someone like me to purchase the PT because my bonus features are held hostage by it!

OK, I think I've decided on getting this set - the Complete Saga one. I don't actually own a set of the movies yet (horrors, I know!), just odd single editions here and there from over the years (some THX vhs tapes, some dvds, some spec. ed. dvds) so it would be nice to have a "definitive" set and this seems good enough to me. I figure the next time they're inevitably released, it will likely be as a 3D edition which I have absolutely no interest in. And if 3D dies out before Lucas remakes all the movies, there probably won't be another release for a good number of years. I am not holding out for an original original release on disc, as Lucas has always said he will not do it. I'll just pick up an old VHS copy somewhere and maybe transfer them to dvd for preservation. Now the only question that remains: pre-order on amazon, or gamble on a lower price at retail down the road?

Why transfer an old VHS copy when you can still get the last DVD release with the "bonus" OOT discs? Would look better than transferred VHS that's for darn sure!

I actually own the Laserdiscs, no player, so I'm not sure if they are anamorphic or not or if I could even get them to play on my HD tv, probably, just not utilizing any of the newer type inputs I suppose.

I'm out. Decided upon seeing that (fake, albeit alarmingly real looking) image of Young Obi Wan in with Young Ani & Yoda at the end of ROTJ. Enough changes, enough.... everything. Gimme a VCR and my THX versions please.
