Favourite "must watch" TV series of recent years
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:10:01 AM »

My wife and I have been watching through several seasons of various recent & current TV shows, and we're looking for a few new suggestions of shows to give a try. I thought I'd start this thread to poll everyone for their "Best of" or "Top 10" TV series from say, the past decade or so, and see if there's any other good suggestions.

Looking back at what we've watched, the ones that stand out as favourites tend to be either short-lived/cancelled network shows that never got a chance, or made-for-cable series'. Here's our "Top 10" list, in no particular order:

Journeyman
Game of Thrones
The Wire
Battlestar Galactica
The Walking Dead
Murdoch Mysteries
Smallville
Prison Break
Doctor Who
The Mentalist

The Sopranos, Deadwood & Entourage are "must watch" series as far as I'm concerned. For the first 2 she will have to have some pretty tough ears as the language is (extremely) foul at times. For entourage, she'll also have to be accepting of the odd (extremely) "adult" situation, as these arise aplenty.

EDITED: Didn't want to sound ill-informed by not having Breaking Bad on my list. Since this post I have watched the entirety of that series and I couldn't recommend it any more highly. Unbelievably brilliant - and they have finally added the final episodes to Canadian Netflix so you can watch the whole thing without interruption.

Better Call Saul makes the list. Not as good as Breaking Bad of course, but it's very welcoming being invited back to San Antonio. The origin story of Mike Ehrmantrout & his relationship with Saul is one of the best episodes of any show ever.

Also wanted to mention True Detective, since season 2 is set to air right as Game of Thrones ends this year. Woody Harrelson & Matthew McConaghey (spelling I'm sure is way off - sorry) are unreal - this is cop story with the intensity of Silence of the Lambs, but it plays out over 8 incredible hours. Highest possible recommendation.

How can you leave out "Firefly"?  It was a short run, only lasting one season but then Joss Whedon wrapped it up with the feature film "Serenity".  You can still find it as a box set at a very reasonable price at shops like HMV.

Every true Star Wars fan is a Luke Skywalker, looking at his twisted, evil father, and somehow seeing good.

Trust me.

I LOVED Firefly & Serenity. It's truly the "Untold Tales of Han Solo", or as close as anyone could ever hope for. Also available on Netflix, just make sure you watch the episodes in the right order (I think the last time I checked they had at least 1 or 2 out of order).
