The new Stormtrooper helmet design for eps7
« on: August 15, 2014, 06:23:55 PM »

I'm not going to post the images that were leaked, I'm sure folks have either seen them already or can find them online if they really want to know.

My only comment is that I don't really like them - they lack detail and seem too streamlined for my tastes.  Reminded me more of TRON than of SW.

Interesting would be the one word I would choose. I think they look pretty cool.

The Prequels are stylistically like the Guilded Age (early 1900s). The Original Trilogy harkens back to the old Hollywood Serials of the 40's and 50's.  Add thirty years, and what do you get?  The 70's and 80's. TRON is not that far off style wise. I think it's brilliant.

We'll have to disagree DW. The one saving grace is that this "iPod" stormie helmet is apparently NOT the helmet design for the primary Stormtrooper but for the  incedeniary trooper (with a flame thrower to boot) and I'm fine with that. I would not want that as the look for the majority of the Imperial army.

With JJ apparently trying to reuse/adapt the old McQuarrie designs for eps7, I am expecting something more along the lines of this style:

More detailing, better sculpted look, just more classic Star Wars-ish.  I love Tron and always will, but not for SW, not even 30 years later thank you very much.  The only point I'll concede is that the iPod helmet fixes the problem that the classic helmet suffered from by offering a wider field of view (no more complaints from Luke about not being able to see anything while wearing one).

I, for one, think the design is acceptable and actually makes sense. The stormtrooper design was reflective of 70s-80s envisioning of a space-faring military trooper. Since the movie takes place roughly 30 years into the future, the design of the trooper should be reflective of modern envisioning of space-like troopers - and everything in modern futuristic concept art is sleek and minimalistic. The design and stylistic choices are a statement of how much has changed in our real world with respect to how much has changed in Star Wars. Our own military has changed since the 70s. Are we still using steel bucket helmets or are we wearing tactical ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene helmets? For a sequel trilogy, I welcome this change in design a lot more than I did for prequel designs and old republic era designs (something that I still don't understand - save me the civilized era argument).

As far as the limited visibility of the old Stormie buckets it makes you wonder if there was actually a heads up display built in them.

Vs the chrome ones that have been showing - which look cool as well.
