My new PC is up and running!
« on: January 12, 2006, 03:16:06 AM »

Well, I decided I'd learn how to build computers and over the past month have built my first one. Today, I'm visiting Snowtroopers for the first time on my new box, and it's working great! For the geeks out there, here are the specs:

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (socket 939)
Motherboard - ASUS A8N5X
Vid Card - ASUS N6600 Silencer (Nvidia G-Force 6600 with 256MB of DDR)
Monitor - Acer 19" LCD
Optical - Sony CD/DVD writer and player

I've also got the Telus highspeed internet rocking - it's SO nice to be able to have phone calls come in while you're online (believe me, the old PC was a relic - I've been on dial up for nearly 6 years).

It was really fun to learn how to build a computer, and I'm sporting quite the awesome feeling of having accomplished something new. I'd recommend building your own to anyone!

Wow that's a pretty shreddin' proc. and vid! :)`

You didn't mention the RAM. If you just have some old stuff in there to get 'er going and plan to upgrade,  I can highly recommend a gig of Corsair from personal experience.

Congrats!

I hope that doesn't make me the only Trooper left on dialup :sad0064:

Totally agree with ya. Figured out how to build a system a few years ago and it was probably one of the most rewarding do it yourself experiences I've ever had.

I now build them for family and friends. Just finished building my 5th. It gets easier every time.

The best and most fun part is picking out everything. You know exactly what is going into it. Its amazing how much there is to know about cooling fans if you want to keep your system flying, for example.

But the best part was I did it relatively without instruction. Which means anyone can do it. Its really that easy. Its almost like putting together IKEA furniture.

Anyway, just thought I wish you a congrats on that. This will save you tons of cash in the long run on computers.

congrats on the build.  i built my first computer about 15 years ago you will never want to buy a computer again without building it yourself.   Those are some nice specs.  I've been thinking about building a new one for myself.  But all money has gone to star wars lately.

:)`  Welcome to the 21st century!

*EDIT*  While my above statement seems prickish, I must ask....how much did this, if any, set you back $?  And did you use that old 'abacus' you were using before to build said computer?  Oh, and can you show me how to do it?

Cash, it was a bit more than I had intended on spending - but I couldn't be happier with the results. I'm quite sure that between me and the book I got for Christmas (and all the manuals that come with the parts) you could do it too. It was close to foolproof, but defnitely challenging enough to give you an amazingly rewarding feeling when you see that it really does work.  :)`

Oh, and I am rocking a cool gig of RAM. It's slicker than grease.  :)
