Carrie Fisher in critical condition
« on: December 23, 2016, 05:24:14 PM »

In the wake of Alan Thicke's heart attack and death, sad to hear our princess has suffered a heart attack and the news is reporting she's in critical condition. My prayers go out to her, I really hope she has a full recovery. 2016 has just been a lousy year for celebrity deaths, this one we do NOT want to end the year with!

Saw an update where it looks like things have stabilized.  She is doing better.

Her brother has denied those reports that she is stable.

He also addressed an earlier comment attributed to him, in which he was alleged to have said his sister was in “stable condition.”

“I don’t know where they got that word from. That is absolutely not even close to the truth. We don’t know. We hope for the best. We certainly do not know her condition, that’s why she is in ICU. I’m sure everyone wants to speculate but now is not the time for that.”

And I've been doing some reading online, the fact that she was 15min away from landing and was being worked on by nurses while still in the plane doesn't improve her odds of surviving, which are at best 20% but more likely at 10%.

Several folks have cited that even if the heart attack had happened inside a hospital with doctors all around, patients have died. I think we need to prepare for what will for me, be the worst possible celebrity death of 2016 :(

It was one thing to lose Kenny Baker, but we're about to lose one of the holy trinity of Star Wars, and quite frankly the one I least expected out of the three to go first.

Carrie has died guys.

Carrie Fisher has passed away at the age of 60.
Simon Halls, a spokesperson for the family, released a statement announcing the actress' death on Tuesday morning.
'It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,' reads the statement.
'She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.'
Her passing comes four days after the actress suffered a heart attack while returning home to Los Angeles to celebrate the holidays with her family.

I am going to see Rogue One tonight with the kids tonight - it will be hard seeing the scene with her in it.  A great lost and like nap seeker has stated it has been a tough year for celebrity deaths in 2016.  I hope they do something special at the Oscars this year.

So sad. Coincidentally, I found a 6" ANH Leia on Christmas Eve hidden at a Walmart and on impulse bought her.

May she RIP. She'll be missed.

Very sad. I'm glad that Star Wars helped to introduce her to the world. She will continue to be loved by future generations of fans to come.

The real sad thing about this is that she struggled for years with substance abuse and was making essential past that and then this happens

Darth Woo:

I collect the odd 6" figure but after reading your post - I went on Walmart.ca and purchase one of her.

This is a tough one - really glad I went to the Star Wars Celebrations that I did and got to see her live and in person.   I am sure they will do something special at 2017 Celebration to honour her and Kenny.

I believe she finish shooting the next Star Wars movie - I wonder if that was to be her last showing in the series?   I hope she had a fairly big role in it.

This was sad to hear. We weee on our last day of vacation at Disney when I saw the news that she had passed away. I wasn't surprised. The reports indicated that she had a Cardiac Arrest and had CPR for 10-15 minutes, then, after landing, the paramedics had to continue working on her before she had a pulse again.

Of note, there has been a lot of misreporting on this in the news. A cardiac arrest and a heart attack are very different. A cardiac arrest means either your heart has no beat at all (asystole), the ventricle is pumping extremely fast but so weak that blood isn't circulating (ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation), or there is an electrical rhythm, but no significant pumping and no pulse (PEA, or pulseless electrical activity). These are considered heart rhythm, or electrical, problems.
A heart attack, on the other hand, occurs because not enough blood and oxygen are getting through the arteries to the heart (the coronary arteries) due to a blockage in the artery,  leading to muscle damage to the heart. On occasion, a heart attack can cause a cardiac arrest, but the vast majority of heart attacks do not. Also, there are many things aside from a heart attack that can cause a cardiac arrest. On a very long plane ride like she was on, a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung) would be the first thing I would think of.

Sorry for the rant, but this is a common misunderstanding that comes up in the news quite often, and I just wanted to clarify a little (hopefully I didn't confuse it even more!)

Regardless, we will always love you, Carrie. I hope you are in a better place, Princess.
