Fair point. I'm guessing these must be Snoke's guards, and there will be a 400 page novel as well as 12 comics and an entry in the visual guide as to the "meaning" of the armor.

I agree with JJ. I would actually be disappointed if I went to Episode VII or VIII and saw Stormtrooper armour or Royal Guard (or whatever they want to call them now) armour and it was exactly the same 30+ years later. 30 years ago would take us back to the 80s. A small list of things that look very different since the 80s:

Big pouffy hairdos for women
Big pouffy hairdos for men (at least hard rock bands : ) )
Goalie equipment in hockey (I'd love to see equipment sizes reduced to what they were in the 80s!)
Team uniforms in all major professional sports
Body armour (or lack thereof) in standard infantry equipment and police uniforms
Mike Tyson could actually fight
Short shorts were in
Acid wash jeans!!

I could go on forever. However, to make this a bit more relevant, how about we look at a few changes from Episodes 1-3 to episodes 4-6 (Episode 1 was 32 ABY, so matches quite well in terms of the time differential):

Clone trooper armour versus storm trooper armour
Palpatine's robes
and the clincher:
The Senate Guards

Let's face it, 30 years is a long time, and things are going to change. We are all completely biased comparing the quality of the movies, the costumes, armour, vehicles, etc. from Episodes 4-6 to now, as we have so much nostalgia attached to our memories of the OT. No matter how cool these new movies are, they will almost certainly not stack up for us. But if they do for the next generation, then they have done what they intended.

Kylo's Tie seems to be about the same size as Hasbro's Darth Maul Sith Infiltrator toy... soooooo, get ready to SQUEEZE your Kylo Ren figure really really tightly into that cockpit.

There definitely needs to be change from film to film. Especially when there is a 30 year gap. But that royal guard design just looks lame.

One thing I thought Lucas did pretty well with the prequels (even though that was extrapolating back in time, while now it is forward) was make the prequel designs new enough while still feeling like it was a natural progression or evolution. The royal guard for episode 8 looks like they tried too hard or something.

As for the figures I only have a desire to get maybe Rey and Luke. But I may hold out for vintage collection versions. I think I'll pretty much be sitting this one out.

Yeah, I agree that some progressions, like this Royal Guard design, are definitely in the wrong direction. Kind of like that streaking hockey puck gimmick they tried on Fox back in the 90s
