Netflix-The Toys That Made Us
« on: December 26, 2017, 06:56:12 AM »

Just found a show on Netflix last night called The Toys That Made Us.  4 Episodes I believe and the history of the toys that kids grew up on.  The first focusing on Star Wars. All the major brands turning down the movie rights till Kenner picked it up through to the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney and the new movies.

Some great interviews with the guys who designed the vintage SW lines of toys.

But not George....

I watched SW, GI Joe & He-Man - haven't checked out the Barbie episode as of yet. I believe "The Mike" was interviewed for an upcoming episode so we will eagerly anticipate that!

In other news, this show is up for "worst theme song" in tv history.  :speechless-smiley-004:

Agreed on the theme song!

Some of the stuff in the documentary was news - the part about the contract with Kenner and Lucasfilm was interesting. I thought they could have gone more into the dying days of the original line (Power of the Force 85) and some of the thinking that went into making decisions about what got made.

Also, I would love to know how Hasbro and Disney work out the deal on toys.  They literally have competing toy lines (Disney's being only sold at Disney stores - I'd love to know the details of that deal!)

What they didn't really mention was the rise of Joes actually being responsible in part for the downfall of the SW line. As soon as I had wave 2 Joes in my hands with the swivel arm articulation - any interest I had in finishing off the last couple of waves of SW figures was long, long, long gone. You couldn't compare the two products in any other category beside height.

I agree. I loved G.I. Joe when I was a kid. The articulation was great and the vehicles were awesome. I found they had much more play ability than SW. I still love Joes and collect them as well.

That may be the case, but most kids of the age intended were a little less discriminatory in the articulation of the toys. Keep in mind right now the most successful "toy" line out there bear almost no likeness at all to the their screen counterparts and often have only a single point of articulation.

While GI Joe may have been physically superior, their success at the time rested a lot on the fact they had a successful morning cartoon, and Star Wars had Ewoks and Droids.  Both of which paled in comparison to Transformers in terms of toy sales.

I did really enjoy the GI Joe cartoon & also the comics - I guess it all played a role - but for me personally it was the comparison between the toys. Maybe not the same for others.

Negative.
While I know many people attached to this, and supplied a couple of figures for an upcoming Transformers one (in January, I think?), I wasn't interviewed for this. ;)

Mike:

I watched the latest video on your site.  Great spots and advertisement for the store.  I have not been in the store for long time, due to where I live, but it looks great.   :u:
