Hello all,
So let me start off by saying, yes, I know there is was a place on eBay selling custom vintage style-slipcovers. There are several problems I have had with them:
- They charged $17 US (plus shipping and import charges!) PER COVER. That's ridiculous. They were nearly the price of a brand new figure! Pretty much the reason why I'm doing this.
- The slipcovers were designed to colour co-ordinate with the insert also that came with it. This looks really cool (gawd I'm sick of the red), but in order to put the insert in you have to open the box. PASS
- Some of the older choices were done when it was not known what kind of logo for the movie would be used on a vintage-style card. So for example many Force Awakens and Rogue One figures are using made-up logos in the style of Attack of the Clones. Of course Rebels doesn't have used logo yet so we're both guessing there.
So, I decided to make make own. I've re-imagined them a bit as being a six-inch "Vintage Collection".
Here are some of the "rules" i'm following:
I'm only doing the "red series" boxes right now, not the original black series (with the orange/blue imperial wall stripe in the back). I like the way those look and they have much less real-estate to redesign on the front anyway. That being said I will post the figures from that series on the back of the boxes. So I went ahead and did pretty much everything black series with a window (clear plastic showing the figure that I can. Missing right now are the Han and Greedo showdown and the Imperial Shadow Squadron- The back will show figures from only the "trilogy" of movies - Groupings will be Original, Prequel, Sequel, Standalone (Rogue One/Solo) and Non-thearical (Clone Wars, Rebels, Legends). This is because there are well over 100 figures in regular releases and exclusives which came in standard packaging and believe it or not, the back of a 6" box has LESS real-estate than the back of a carded 3.75" figure and the pics would have to be almost 50% of the size that they are on the back of a POTF-92 back card - in other words, waaaay too small.
- I guess it goes without saying but I'm looking for components/elements of existing Vintage-style cards to include on the box. For example, the back is a mash up of the new vintage collection backs (which have just six pics) and the old (which housed many more).
So other things you might be interested in:
- Yes, I will be doing one for every figure ongoing forever. Even for boxes I don't have (so long as I have the measurements)
- Yes, I will be making them available. See my post in the Buy & Sell
- Yes, I have super-hi res of this on my computer. Nearly all the elements on the page are done in vector drawings, with the obvious differences being the picture on the front, the figure on the back, and actually the border swatch/gradient was too difficult to reproduce without being a scan, so it's a bitmap as well.
- Unwrapped, the box is 9" x 14". This is unfortunate because with dimensions like that it means the smallest sheet of paper it can be printed on is ledger (11x17) and most home printers won't do that size. I'm looking to print on light cardstock or high gloss paper - I'll try both and see what happens
- I will keep doing these so long as the 6" black series remains non-vintagey and also allows itself to be wrapped by a slipcover. So for example if they start shipping figures in ovoid packaging, I really can't continue.
Feedback is of course appreciated
EDIT - here is a list of all that I've done. I'll keep this up to date here

No feedback from me yet, but it's looking awesome so far Dangerlinto. :)`

Looks awesome so far. Definitely interested.
Would a pic of the action figure itself on the side of the box be possible? Would look awesome with all of the boxes lined up and seeing the pics of the figures. If not maybe just the name of the character in larger sideways font or something so u can ID the fig from afar by just looking at the side of the box.

Not for many of them - the pics I can normally get can't be much larger than 3-4 inches tall (which might be fine) but often have accessories and/or poses that would make them not fix on the box well.
Good suggestion though. The name *will* be under the number on the red side, but that font is a pain - it costs $40 and I was only able to replicate the digits (0-9) so far.
Yes we need the sideways name on the sides somewhere. I will add them soon.
-
Cool. Love the back of the box btw. Looks amazing
-
I don't really collect 6 inch, but I have to say, this is amazing. Very well done!
-
Oh man this looks great. I was just recently looking at those slip covers on ebay and man $17US each is pretty extreme. I would love to outfit some of my OT black series figures that I have kept boxed into some of these.
I very much appreciate when fellow collectors with talent make these kinds of things available at a nominal cost. Like Frank Diorio's diorama materials. I don't mind paying a fee but it is hard to justify when the slip cover is basically the cost of an actual figure.
I look forward to seeing your progress. I'll think on it and if I have any suggestions I'll be happy to pass them on. Though things look to be going beautifully as they are. Good stuff!!!!
-
A couple ideas for the sides:
1. The character's name in Aurebesh
2. A 3/4 Moon of the affiliation of the Character (Rebel symbol, imperial symbol, the Phoenix for SW Rebels, Republic, Mando symbol, Resistance, First Order) Imagine the circular bases for the Hot Wheels ships, imposed over the bottom left corner. It would form a wedge but look cool.
(https://image.ibb.co/m7symK/sidesample.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/) I threw this together as a quick idea in paint
3. A lightsaber that references their place in the Lore (Yoda for prequel, Luke for Saga, Kylo for sequels, Mace for Legend)

So an update...
I've decided the red side of the box is dumb, and needs to be removed for two very good reasons. First, when the box/slipcover is wrapped, the transition from red to black might not line up perfectly (just as an actual box is not perfect in this regard, and so removing it means that imperfection will be hidden. secondly, making it black made it much more vintage-like and let me do vintage-like things.
So an update - you'll notice I've used a 2nd generation box - who's window is smaller and has more real-estate and I've added grey separation lines just to show where the box folds would be:

So the one side of the box has the figure name stylized with the border and the other side has the movie logo (as all Vintage-style boxes do) and the name in the typeface of the movie type itself.
On the back you'll see I've added the text from the back of the actual box. I think I should be able to get for each figure. (Astute people will notice something I missed on the first version above) :)
-
Wow this looks amazing. Great work!
I like the 2nd generation to allow for more real estate for the picture but would it be possible to have the bottom left corner window opened a little further along the border to show more of the figure?
This is a million time improvement over the actual boxes.

I think you're missing something. The "2nd Generation" is actually because the releases from Baze Malbus and Chirrut Imwe on, the boxes actually changed. So every figure from then on has this configuration. I can't open it up or you'd just see the original box underneath.
-
Oh ok gotcha, showing the box underneath is obviously not good. I must have misread that when I skimmed your long post lol. Regardless it’s looking awesome.
It may be too early for this but have you enquired about sourcing a printing company to see what cost would be per box? Let me know if there’s anything you need help wth in this regard. Be happy to help.

Well they are just slipcovers, so I'm thinking high-gloss paper. I was thinking card stock but I'm not sure how well that will work with edges, since they'd all be white. I'd have to take a black sharpie to all exposed edges if I go with card stock.

Very nice work.

I don't know how how into customs some of you all are, but there is nothing, nothing like the feeling when everything is working out EXACTLY as you want:
Those are the 3 test prints I got back. Glossy black, thick stock and gorgeous lines. All that's left is to cut them and make sure they wrap nicely around (they might need a little extra length but if so that's no big deal) and then get the fold lines printed on the sheet to make it easier.
And then do the remaining 50 or so I have left to do.
-
Dang. Simply amazing.

Yes! Beautiful! Love the Luke in particular. Just because, well, OT. :) Great work!
-
Here is an example of what we're looking at when completed ( I might need to shave a millimeter or two off the total wrap around to get it tight)
The Phasma is my favourite. Getting that screenshot with her eye showing through was tough! (My Camera doesn't seem to want to take nice pictures - the fuzzieness is all camera - I'll have to find a way to fix the lighting here so you can all see how crisp they are)

also how it pops as opposed to standard boxes

Wow your cover really stands out! It seriously looks a million times better. Great work.

Perfectly illustrates how far off the mark Hasbro is with their black series design. What they seem to think is classy and sophisticated is actually bland and nondescript. Your design pops! Beautiful!
Great collection, by the way.
One suggestion for the backs. Which you may not like because it would cause inconsistency. What about a light blue backdrop instead of yellow for the ESB figures listed on the back? I personally always liked the light blue better than the yellow, but that's personal preference. Either way, they look fantastico!!

Thanks. Actually the shelves are custom made and it's only one wall. Along the top of the wall are Vintage Collection Figs as a trim.

I'll be getting to ESB figs tomorrow or Wednesday (I've done all the sequel figs and just need 4 more ANH ones) and I'll give it a shot.

Seriously impressive work, dangerlinto. Beautiful design and a marked improvement on the current presentation of the line. I'm envious of how awesome your collection will soon look on display!

Your design looks fantastic!

Ahhhhh! That is the Nostalgia I have been looking for. :P
GREAT JOB DANGER!

So I've finished all 76 figures in standard boxes that appear in the 10 movies. All that's left are the Clone Wars/Rebels and other oddities (like Battlefront figures and Revan and Jaina Solo). I'd actually looking forward to those the most so I've been saving them for last.
So far, the only one I'm not happy with is the Qi'ra image - since Solo is not out and there is no high quality video, there is only one screenshot out there of the character in her Corellia outfit and the entire thing is blue. I did some color correction on it but it's not great. I will re-do it when the movie is available digitally.
Also, I had thoughts of doing some of the larger boxes (Like the Gamorrean Guard which unfolded would be over 20" long), but it turns out that the cost of printing on anything larger than 11x17 is pretty astronomical, so I won't be doing it in the forseeable future.
I will be offering these for people who want them. I'm not 100% sure how we'll send them - definitely we'll cut them, black the edges and fold them, but gluing the flap and just sending it pre-folder or just marking the fold lines on the back and allowing them to glue it themselves (regular kids gluestick works great) - I haven't decided yet. I'm thinking $5/cover and probably a large discount if you want the whole set (which right now is 90 covers!). Also if you get the whole set some kind of subscription plan on further covers for cheap. Chime in if you're interested just to let me know what you think of the plan or suggest one - i'm open to suggestions.
(I'll put a more formal post in Buy & Sell when I'm done sometime this week)
-
Oh I’m in! Definitely love what you created and happy to support your hard work and talent. Totally agree if you have people buying the whole set then a bulk discount / future discount would be warranted and appreciated.
For me personally I’d prefer them shipped flat. Just FYI I’d be down for remakes of the larger boxes too but one step at a time lol.
Can’t wait to add this to my collection! Amazing work!

Well, I've finally finished the first 88. Here's links for all of them, if you'd like a look
* Edit - I've moved the list to the first post *

DAYUM. This is epic DL!
Have u figured out what you want to charge for the set?

So, for those wondering what a wall of these looks like:
6 inch Vintage Collection (http://www.mmbhl.ca/images/Swslipcovers/6inchVintageCollection.jpg)
-
Hot damn! You sir are an artist. Looks badass!
-
Ok so on the first page, I've moved the list of everything I've done there.
It now includes the Orange and Blue series of 6" figures.
Blues ones were tough. There isn't a lot of design room, and I over extended on both the Orange and Blue to get a little more picture in there, but I also didn't want to cover faces or take too much away from the very open window (a design choice of theirs I liked) so it necessitated some oddities like the movie logo at the bottom for the blue series
-
They put the standard ones to shame. Absolutely amazing. :love0030:

And the other wall (with some unfortunately stuck behind)
Original Blue and Orange 6-Inch Vintage Collection (http://www.mmbhl.ca/images/Swslipcovers/BlueAndOrange.jpg)
The empty space is for the TIE Pilot I'm missing...

So here is something I'm trying out for the deluxe Figures.
Speeder Bike with Biker Scout Front and Right (http://www.mmbhl.ca/images/Swslipcovers/BlackSeriesDoubleSidedSlipcover_BikerScoutSide1.png)
Speeder Bike with Biker Scout Back and Left (http://www.mmbhl.ca/images/Swslipcovers/BlackSeriesDoubleSidedSlipcover_BikerScoutSide2.png)
The deluxe boxes are too big for me to print on a single sheet (cheaply) - so I did them on two.
PS - for those of you who have a Luke with Wampa. Look at the back. Worst. Back. Any Product. Ever.
-
Awesome

Very nice. Agreed on the wampa set. Pretty bad. It would look so much better in vintage style. ☺
-
Ok I added all the 2-piece deluxe sets I could (except Stormtrooper with Blast accessories, which is still too expensive for me to buy without vomiting) and also Leia Bespin Escape
-
Awesome work Danger! Oh and a BIG HAPPY BDAY to you!
-
Added the latest bunch to the list on the 1st post

Got the most recent ones thanks DL. They look great.

So I thought I'd document a little what goes into making of these work.
Of main concern is how annoying the triangular picture and how annoying screenshots are of moving characters
So lets take a look at the Ezra Bridger picture I'm looking to do for that upcoming figure. Here is the shot I'm using:
So first things first - you'll notice that this shot has his lightsaber-gun without his lightsaber lit. This is actually perfect because the vast majority of the time Jedi/Sith characters are moving around with their lit lightsaber which causes a terrible motion blur on the pic that can't be undone. Of course, we WANT a pic with his lightsaber lit, but since it's an effect - we'll you'll see below how easily that is fixed.
Now, let take a look that is a common problem with almost all these shots:
The black overlay here is the area that we have to work with. If I shrink the area (proportionally) down, I'm gonna lose something. Most importantly, we want his head about 2/3 of the way up the picture, and we want his lightsaber in frame. That means making the frame about as big as you see here.
So, that means there is about 10% of the frame in a triangle at the top that simply doesn't exist. Something like 95% of the picture I've done I've had to deal with this, because most everything is a screen capture and the widescreen aspect ratio doesn't help (PS, Pan and Scan are just cut-off version of all SW widescreen films, so they wouldn't help either)
So, I simply draw it. This is really, really easy when the picture is of sky or space or a flat wall or a blurry picture, but we are only so lucky on this picture - the ceiling has some detail, so I'll have to extend and fill in some of that detail. Thankfully it's not super-detailed so I'll get away with a lot of grey.
And of course, I want the lightsaber - so:
And that's pretty much it. In a lot of cases I have to "brighten" (it's a little more complicated than that) the image because printing requires greater contrast and brightening helps, but that's pretty much it - i cut out the framed area and import it into the vector-based drawing for the rest of the box.
And now you can see some of the work done to make one of these - you know, in case you thought it was easy ;)
-
Everyone I’ve picked up is simply gorgeous. Seriously great work.
