Title: ESB Retro Will They come to Canada?
Post by: 66jedikiller66 on April 15, 2020, 12:03:26 PM
Title says it all.
Has anyone heard anything about these making it to our country?

I'd also like to know. I asked a while back in another thread and got no response. The only thing I've seen so far is the Hoth board game on amazon.ca.

Apparently no, the retro figures were not part of the WM Canada plans, but this store has been known to surprise... or not. We'll just have to wait and see, but if I were you I'd try to find other means to get them...

The Retro Hoth Gameboard with Luke Snowspeeder is supposed to come to Canada, yes. This is not supposed to be an exclusive...

If Walmart Canada is not carrying them then it should be open to someone else to carry in Canada.  Is hasbro Canada even bringing them in? Could we get them from a Canadian online retailer?

Or do we have to hope the Walmart US exclusive window closes and they become more widely available and perhaps we can order from a US online retailer?

Maybe TRU again?

Weren't they at Superstore/Loblaw's last time?
Title: Re: ESB Retro Will They come to Canada?

Yep. Superstore & TRU, both in good numbers if I recall. Won't stop Fett from being sought after but I don't believe anything was short packed to create any real chase last time.

I never saw a single one at my TRU. It's possible they got 1 case at one point and sold out right away. I don't think they were super-widespread distributed. Some stores more than others, and probably not enough quantity in the country for a restock.

Ya, in my neck of the woods i didnt see any of these Retro figures during the first wave. maybe i'll have better luck this time around. idk. seems like they arent very widespread for sure. boo

Wedge.  Here in Whitby, it seemed all the Superstores got 2 of each figure and TRU did get cases in but I don't there were much more than a couple cases sent.   Derek might know different, but that is how I recall them.   I thought we would see more later on at Christmas but I never saw any more.

I saw the first wave at Superstore as well.
Never saw them once at the only Toysrus in my town.

Tru received one case of 6 figures per store, And maybe one reorder (April/may 2019).  SuperStore seemed to get two boxes per store as CJ mentioned. (June/July I think).
I just hope these come to Canada in someway this year.

Ah, well, with just 1 TRU and 1 Superstore in my entire region, that would explain why I never saw any! Luckily I get my cases elsewhere, though not sure yet how I'll get the ESB ones.

Interesting read today regarding the ESB Retros in the States.  Looks like Covid is going to be responsible for a delay.

I can confirm that UPC 501099368721 is accurate for Walmart on Stocktrack.ca for these. Only 1 store in my area is showing these as In Stock, all others are Not Sold. The figures are being put out in a big cardboard island display, together with Ghostbusters Retro figures. So probably just a few stores for now getting these as promo items.

Last night my local store showed 42 in stock, so 7 cases. I was going to head out that night but it just didn't work out. This morning, the stock read 37. My heart sank - somehow I just knew - and sure enough when I got there at noon, my suspicions were confirmed. Not a single Fett left in the display! But all other were still there in full quantity. Some @#$% scalper beat me to them. So I picked out the other 5 for myself, and thought "But the stock only went down by 5 this morning, maybe there was another somewhere... I'll check the toy aisle". And haha! There was a lone Fett hanging on a random peg in the Star Wars section that he missed! So thankfully got a full set (painfully pricey at $17.97 each), but really sucks for others in my area who will be missing a Fett from their set now.

Are you opening them?  I'm only interested in Yoda cause the soft goods on him seem to look better than the one from the Cave of Evil 3 pack Yoda.  Was wondering if this soft goods cloak would fit that Yoda.

Not opening, no. Only ended up getting one set of the retros so far, just to keep carded. At the prices they are, I couldn't justify a set to open. Thanks.  Didn't realize someone talked about it in the comments.  Guess it will be like how the Jedi Luke's vintage cloak would be.  I had one that I used on my DSII Luke and it was kinda weird cause it was too short.

LOL It seems everytime I make a move, it creates something nice.

Managed to buy a good portion of the Retro ESB figures from WM US (obviously except Boba Fett), send them to a friend who will send them thru the border to me.

Then, 2 days later, they show up in Canadian WM stores. My friend confirmed that WM Canada was to receive a few of these... but I just couldn't take any chances I guess.

LOL  :tongue0024: :rollfloorlaffsmiley:

Not the first time I jinx myself. Been doing that over the last few years with numerous WM or TRU exclusive figures. I tell myself that it's me who's responsible for stuff to happen... jinxing myself so the mass can benefit in the end.  ;D

Okay, I'll probably end up paying a little less even with the exchange rate and the shipping... provided I'm not paying customs fees. I managed to grab 2 Fetts for myself, so I'm good now.

So... my apologies for the false alarm on these... looks like we'll be getting a truck load. But their prices... damn it... come one Walmart Canada, you're exaggerating a little bit. My guess is that you think they are the same type of products as TVC... but they're not...  ::)

Thankfully I have a complete set of all the originals, albeit loose, so I won’t have to pay this ridiculous price for a reproduction figure on a worn out looking card.

As if it wasn't already obvious how insane that price is.... I bought a 4-pack of delicious Drumstick ice cream cones at my local supermarket last week. Cost was $4 for 4 cones.

So buying one retro-card ESB figure is equivalent to about 4.5 boxes of these cones or EIGHTEEN ice cream cones (we're talking vanilla flavour with a solid chocolate coating decorated with peanuts and caramel or creamy peanut butter center).

I'm a Star Wars fan, but I'd rather eat the 18 ice cream cones. Especially in this weather  :rollfloorlaffsmiley:

Excellent choice. :D

It's interesting to explore our options as consumers here. Refusing to pay full price for these will lead WM to report to Hasbro that they don't sell. Hasbro then has to decide whether or not to make more. For this particular line I really don't care, but I appreciate that some fans really do. So tough choice. If you want the line to continue, do you bite the bullet? What if you really like the line but feel the price is absurd? What action can you take?

Please, sir, I humbly request that you amend your previous statements re: "Nestlé Drumsticks" and remove all reference to them as "ice cream". If you would peruse the entirety of the product's packaging, you will note that the term "ice cream" is nowhere mentioned, least of all in the list of ingredients.

Joking aside, I remember when those conical frozen dessert products used to be less than $1 apiece, however I believe the inflation on action figures puts even Nestlé to shame (and that's saying something!)  :rollfloorlaffsmiley:

Oh my stars and garters, you are CORRECT!  I had to walk over to the fridge and check the box and yes, it does indeed say "sundae cone" and not "ice cream cone".   Next thing you know I'm going to find out that my hot dog weiners are really made from cheaper cow anus instead of the proper pork anus.   :confused0024:

@jjreason: I think if the retro collection consisted of something more than just repacks of vintage figures, then people would be far more willing to pay the $18 and support the line, that is Hasbro gives us more of the figures we all wish Kenner had made as well like General Rieekan, Monkey-face holo Emperor, Dagobah Training Luke, Removable helmet Vader (which could be an easy kitbash of the vintage Vader), Hoth Han with his hood down (again, an easy kitbash), a Yoda that was more accurate but still had the vintage look, other Hoth Rebels, etc.

I ended up buying a set of the figures from someone in the US. With shipping and exchange the cost is only a bit more than what I would buy these at the store for. If I can actually find them at a store. The nearest Walmart is an hour drive for me.

I think John Byrne enjoyed drawing him so much he dragged him from one book to the other back in the 80s, but you're right the movies did make a clear statement. Gladly the X-Men have been brought back into the Marvel fold. They seem to be biding their time, but hopefully we'll get a new X-Men movie someday.

It's interesting when using stocktrack not a single walmart in york region shows as carrying these. I wonder how accurate stocktrack is, but if it is accurate, that's pretty crazy for all the walmarts near me to just not carry them.

I'm kinda hoping that online retailers will carry them after an exclusivity window for walmart. Then just order the whole wave, and not have to try and chase down a boba fett. Ugh!

I'm pretty sure it's accurate. From what I can tell, only a few stores received the island displays of these. There was only 1 that got them in Niagara Region. Hopefully that is just the initial promotional shipment of the figures - maybe more stores will get "regular" stock in without the promo displays eventually. Or maybe that's it. I don't understand why HasCan can't even just run a twitter account or something letting collectors know what/when/how much is available. That's gotta take maybe 5 minutes of someone's day.

Yeah the store that shows 14 in stock when I search is in Scarborough.  Not near me. All others are in Toronto, mississauga, Oakville and Milton.  Barrie showed up earlier. But literally nothing in York region. I live within about 10 km from 4 walmarts and none of them showed stock.

The Aisle Island came out in North Walmart in Regina. Someone posted it and an hour later, all of the Yodas and Bobas were gone. An hour later, it was empty. But they did still have the Real Ghostbusters.

I got mine last week. Haven't played it yet but cracked it open. I do love the look of the game. The cover has that great vintage photo design and the board has some stylin art.

My Luke had some slight wrinkling below the peg hole. So the card isn't mint but good enough. I will likely try and get another if it goes on sale somewhere to open one. The Luke looks great and I love he came with an ascension gun.

My Luke (Snowspeeder) has creasing from the peg hole down the centre of the card as well. This happened with my Tarkin from Escape From Death Star Game. The creasing seems to be a factory defect for both games.

Yup, same here. Must be from the machine that inserts them into the packaging.
Doing a quick search of them on ebay - there's several honest sellers that highlighted a photo of the problem.
Everyone else used stock photos or did not highlight it (some I'm convinced look photo-shopped as well).
Not sure I would bother trying to get a mint one Darth Cujo, they're probably all like that.

Thanks for the input guys. Im not surprised that it seems to be a consistent thing. Unfortunate. It's still not that terrible so I will likely jump on a second to keep one on card if I can get one on sale. I'm hoping these will show up in relatively decent numbers like the first one did. And go on sale like the first one did.

Looking forward to playing the game with my daughter. She's not really into star wars but she likes board games. And lord knows we are looking for new ways to be entertained these days.

I came close to getting one too, but just went to my game shelf and opened up the one I still have from 80's. My daughters saw me open it up and asked if we could play. Sigh. I was so happy I forgot all about retro figure.
