Rebelscum has been given Order 66
« on: June 26, 2021, 07:49:09 AM »

On the front page of Rebelscum, Philip Wise has let the membership know he is passing the baton over to a company that buys Star Wars collections and sells Star Wars toys, the company is called Order 66 toys.   Beside looking at the front page of Rebelscum, I do not utilize the Rebelscum web site.   So I don't really know the culture or what it feels like to be an active member of rebelscum.com . My immediate reaction was, it looks like they just let the fox into the chicken coop.   It also made me think that Rebelscum is probably less about a love for Star Wars and more about buying and selling Star Wars toys.  And if it is not that now, it will most likely move to that with Order 66 at the helm because that is their business model.   No judgement either way on this next statement but it also looks like Philip cashed in and actually sold the web site to someone who would actually pay for it. In my opinion , this is totally OK to do, Philip would have had to spend money in order to create the community, so it is totally OK to get compensated for all the money and work that he put into developing the site.  Finding out about the change at rebelscum also made me a little concern & wondering about what will happen in the future to my beloved snowtrooper.ca.  Just wondering if anybody else had a reaction to the change at rebelscum.

My only use of Rebelscum, and Yakface as well, is to read the opening news page to see what’s coming up.  I don’t take part in the boards or contribute to them in any other way.  I won’t really miss Rebelscum - I liked Yakface more.

I was long time member of SirStevesGuide back in the day - in fact that's how I found out about this place. "SSG" members always felt a bit like Rebelscum was a rival in some weird way, our forums were better than theirs type of thing. Lots of people used both. Eventually, I grew tired of the non stop circular conversations - you knew who would defend a terrible product & who would hate a great product.... it just became tiring. I did create some great friendships which have continued until now, though.

Why am I telling this story? I believe the same thing happened a few years ago over at SSG. Steve sold the site. I think things have continued on there pretty much as normal, with the forums being the true source of information & discussion... and I hope RS continues on similarly.

Sure wish they'd update that amazing visual guide more frequently though, that's the only RS bookmark I have.

I have had an account there for over a decade but rarely post. Mainly because I found with so much traffic there, my posts seemed to be drowned out. Felt I wasn't really adding anything to the conversation. And when I found snowtroopers, this became my online SW home. I did browse a lot as the boards were a great source of up to the minute news on what was out there and what was coming, and detailed comments on the actual figures as people buy them and post their thoughts. Their main page hasn't really been of much use in years. Yakface is the place to go for news and rumours. The photo archive was, and for not so current stuff, is the best photo archive on the web. Sadly it has been neglected in recent years.

Re: Philip Wise, he always seemed like this enigmatic webpage owner who wasn't really engaged with the current community. I know virtually nothing about him, even though I have been going to the webpage for years and years. It seems he has a pretty great vintage collection, but has he ever actively collected modern stuff? It always seemed odd that the owner of a super-fan website had virtually no presence on the site. Not really a criticism, just an observation. And I've always been thankful for the website as it has been incredibly useful over the years. I know it takes a great deal of time and I imagine some money (I have no clue what costs of running a website are like, or would rebelscum actually make money?) to keep a webpage running and relevant. And to his credit for a long time he had people doing a really good job with the site. It just seems like it has faded into irrelevancy in recent times. I'm honestly surprised he didn't cash out ages ago.

As for the future, I hope it doesn't change the intent of the site and maybe new blood will bring it back to life a bit. But I am always skeptical of a private-for-profit company taking over a fansite. The cynical side of me feels it will likely be a thinly veiled tool to promote their products all in the name of being "by the fans, for the fans". Time will tell.

My advice to them would be more frequent relevant news and focus on the strength of the photo archive and bring it up to date. And I mean, within a couple weeks of release get photos of a new figure up there.

I wonder if this is more of something like the Yojoe.com site situation. A big company that only cares about ads and traffic comes in to buy websites. I never really visited this site.

Is that what happened to yojoe.com? It's an amazing database/reference but the message boards and news are basically dead.

Rebelscum used to be my go-to site for news, and especially for their totally awesome figure database. I also used the forum there, but mainly to buy/sell figures. That was back in 2009-2013ish, when I was first building up my collection, during the Golden Age of Modern Figures and TVC Part 1. As Darth Cujo mentioned, the regular forum conversations progressed too fast for me - I prefer Snowtroopers for that, especially as the Canadian membership is more relevant to me.

Then around when TVC died, Rebelscum seemed to go through a change. The news page switched to mostly ad/promo-type articles, posts about ebay auctions, etc. Very little news/rumors like they used to do. That's also when they stopped keeping the photo archive up-to-date and as well detailed as before. And finally, it's when there was a lull in new product being released that I was actually interested, along with my collection backlog being pretty much cleaned up - so I didn't need to used the buy/sell forum anymore either.

After that I switched to Jedi Temple Archives for several years. The photo archive is almost as good as the old part of Rebelscum's, and at least it gets updated very frequently. They do also mix in more news and rumor posts, although there's still a lot of promo posts too. The Disqus comments are not a good substitute for a forum though, so it's for that reason that I still come back here - the community. Plus, Paul's increasing snarkiness in recent years and the vocal group of anti-Disney fanboys has made reading the comments there a chore at best. One interesting parallel to Rebelscum is that Chuck, the site owner of JTA, is also pretty low-profile, though he does at least put up a few posts and will comment from time to time.

These days, I probably split my time between here and ActionFigureNews.ca, which I good general site since I also collect Marvel Legends, McFarlane DC, and the odd Transformer. The forum is just the right level of busy to keep up with, and it's Canadian so the sightings and news are relevant to me. I'm also on a Facebook group of local toy hunter friends that we started to try and help each other beat out the scalpers.

Yes, consider yojoe dead. It isn't updated anymore and I believe there are dead links on some of the site now. 3DJoes is doing great things though. This is the go to site now.

Well it's been a couple months now with rebelscum under new ownership. There have been a lot of new articles covering different aspects of star wars collecting, with a heavy focus on past hasbro 3.75". Can't say I've read many of them but I like that they're trying to get people educated on what came before black series and vintage collection. There was alot of cool stuff, and many gems to be found especially if an aspiring collector is tiring of the announcement 1 year in advance / preorder 2 minute window / is it going to be damaged in shipping cycle.

The forums are the main reason I check the site and news of new and upcoming products on the main page are a close second. Those have not changed with the new owners as far as I can tell so for now I'll keep visiting to see what's up.
