Haslab Rancor
« on: July 16, 2021, 02:46:05 PM »

Well, they let it slip yesterday, but it's now official. Pretty boring. I'll be skipping. Even though I collect OT in Black series, black series is secondary for me and a rancor at this scale is too much. And the $$$ will be prohibitive I'm sure.

Rancor is not exciting enough for me on it's own.  Now add an Rancor Keeper, Oola, and Yarna, I would buy it!.....then sell the Rancor loose on eBay.

It's a great idea anyhow. I hope they get enough support!

I really wonder how well this will do. I suppose how much Hasbro wants to charge for it will be a big factor, but so far I've not really seen huge excitement for the announcement on the interwebs (as I like to call them), not to the same degree as the Haslab Galactus for sure.

I'm trying to phase out of 6-inch and back to 4-inch personally, so this is a pass for me.

I have always been a big fan of all the beasts and monsters in the Star Wars movies from the Bantha, Dewback, Wampa, TaunTaun, and especially the Rancor (I have 3 of them from various releases).  Even others from the prequels such as the Kaadu, Falumpaset, Opee, Fambaa, the Reek, the Nexa, and Massiff have found their way into my collection.  I have 12” versions of the TaunTaun, Dewback and Kaadu as well.
I must say the Rancor has been one of my favourites, but I do agree with Ian - I don’t know what I would do with a supersized version without some of the appropriate 6” figures to display with it.  Oola, Yarna and the Keeper would be ideal if they were to be made available.

Actually if they did that I'd be tempted to jump in,, and as you say Ian sell the rancor after. I wonder if there would be a glut of loose rancors for a while.

I am really curious to see how it performs. And what the price point will be.

I'm guessing those characters may be add on for target sales much like TVC figs were added for each threshold reached on the Razorcrest.  But still a pass for me.

The Rancor is nice beast, but at this scale, easy pass for me. I look forward what will be the price.

Maybe they'll do them as add ons for reaching backing goals like with Razorcrest!
 Oops. Fishman said this already.

I think this is a pass for me as well. I am scaling back my 6" collection and not picking up a lot of it now. It seems like this is going to be a pass for a lot of people.

Wow! So they revealed the rest of the stretch goal rewards.... and the number of backers went down. Ouch. Not looking too good for the rancor. It will be interesting to see how it finishes. I know these things always get a huge surge right at the end, but I'm not sure I've seen such a drop in backers mid campaign.

I do hope it gets funded, even though I have no interest. But maybe this will lead hasbro to think more creatively on haslab projects. I really wish they'd use it to fund obscure things that are a lot more affordable. Like alien back ground characters in 5 packs or maybe some modular playsets. A modular deathstar that would benefit from people buying multiples would be great. Or a droid pack where you can mix and match parts.

Between the “hidden” larger orders of third-party vendors and the FOMO crew, I’d be shocked if the rancor didn’t reach its necessary backing number - even with the more than disappointing tiers.

Now, do I think it’ll meet any of the tier goals? Seems doubtful beyond maybe the Gammorean.

And this is where we run into an interesting conundrum. If the full set of tiers is truly nowhere near being reached, how many people currently holding out will drop off in the last couple of days? Because $350 USD plus shipping and taxes is NOT justifiable for what the rancor is (on its own).

Such a mind-boggling series of decisions behind the cost and the campaign tiers. It’s pretty clear that Hasbro wanted to minimize their cost to make the biggest profit possible. How else do you justify two repacks, a cardboard backdrop and small sculpted bones and essentially a crowdfunded New Luke who will eventually ultimately be released for the upcoming anniversary? The fine-print suggests that that figure wouldn’t be rereleased in that packaging, so it’s a given that the intention was to double-dip on the sculpt in a couple of years. I get that it’s the prerogative of a company to make profits, but there’s also something to be said for building good-will in a fanbase, especially when your catchphrase is “for the fans”.

Heading into the final two tiers I had little illusion that we’d get Oola (for obvious reasons) and that they’d be doing Jedi Luke. But I never would have imagined they’d actually not produce a rancor keeper - a likely peg warmer at retail - for, you know, a collector-focused RANCOR project.

Sigh.

I agree, I believe there is a chance this still funds but with possibly only one stretch goal. The project seems too expensive for what it is and in the end it really isn't exciting. Early on I decided I was going to pass on it.
Before this project I don't remember hearing a group of fans saying,"Hey, wouldn't it be awesome if they made a 6" Rancor?" Maybe there were a whole bunch of people but I never heard about it. I guess Hasbro wanted to try a Haslab project for the six inch scale. Clearly that doesn't seem to be working out for them. I think they should stick to the 3 3/4" scale and really concentrate on those projects that would never be sold in stores.

I think the key is they didn't include the Rancor Keeper. They probably wanted to release him later on after everyone got their Rancors but it seems to be backfiring on them.

I wonder about the rancor keeper. If you included it, then folks not buying a rancor would not get a keeper. I would buy a keeper, but have zero interest in the rancor. So they'd then have sold 10,000 or more to rancor owners, and then would need to sell again to the rest of us. Makes me wonder how many of each regular release figure do they produce? 25,000, 100,000, more? I have no idea. But if the numbers aren't super high they might not have wanted to double dip on the keeper. Or they'd piss off everyone who can't afford (or just doesn't want) a rancor if they kept the keeper exclusive.

Without knowing their production numbers it's hard to judge.

I do also agree with Eradicator. I don't remember anyone really saying "Hey, wouldn't it be awesome if they made a 6" Rancor?" . At least not any real ground swell of collectors asking for it. I think this is similar to the skystriker. It's hobbling along as well. I feel like that was not something joe fans were clamoring for. I'm skipping that, partly because it's not something I really want that bad, and also because of the price. They added a bunch of stuff that gives "added value" but that just Jack's up the price. I think a lot of people feel a skystriker should have been just a cheaper regular release. Again, it seems hasbro doesn't quite have their hand on the pulse (ha!) Of their fans.
